MrBigStuff 398 Report post Posted December 7, 2016 Kane Smith I say...can ride but gets very limited opportunities. He may not be the most underrated but did just spring to the top of my mind. gubellini, hedley, La Zip and 1 other

Shad 1,558 Report post Posted December 7, 2016 Good to see sha wahab gets a win today, i think its his first, was ridden with plenty of patience. I think racha cuneen is abit under rated, certainly is riding well at the moment. Certainly is a tough life, and we must spare a thought to the ones that we have lost over the years. gubellini 4,004 Report post Posted December 7, 2016 Lynsey Satherley is one. Good to see her win on Autumn Wind at Ellerslie today. Does the hard yards at the Trials educating them but doesn't get the rides raceday very often. ivanthegreat, sir1galivant, Steve Paul and 4 others
The Crucible 632 Report post Posted December 7, 2016 Just to clarify, under rated does not mean the jockey with the worst strike rate in the country. Some of those named are contenders for that honour. WhoKnows
WhoKnows 791 Report post Posted December 7, 2016 I think Cameron Lammas is very under-rated, every time I've backed him he has given his mount it's chance, he also isn't afraid to put his horses in the race which goes a long way to getting a positive result. His strike-rate this season is pretty good as well. Grego, Gruff, THE TORCH and 2 others

None of the above. it could be bloody superb if everyone of the rides is over $50. S/R of jockeys has zero relevance unless the price of the runner is taken into account. The only way to determine a jockeys ability is to apply an Actual to Expected formula over a long period of time. gubellini 4,004 Report post Posted December 7, 2016 Newmarket note that Autumn Wind today was one of the few favourites that Lynsey ever gets to ride. Her previous winner was First Honour at Ellerslie on November 26. He paid $56.10. Sadly she mainly rides only longshots! barryb 2,064 Report post Posted December 7, 2016 Mark Hills in the North Daniel Bothamley in the South Masa Tanaka in the CD All 3 riders have outstanding A to E's & just backing them when riding in a certain price range will turn a profit long term. sir1galivant, gubellini, MrBigStuff and 1 other

Lynsey's A to E is the 2nd lowest in the North, so regardless of price the runner is paying she doesn't have a positive influence on the horses chances. So if using a graph to illustrate, she is significantly on the wrong side of break even line through the middle on anything she rides. Where as the 3 I mention above are significantly above the break even line and have a strong positive influence.

To put in in the best way..... going from riding favourites to outsiders can happen if a jockey argues back to top trainers. gubellini 4,004 Report post Posted December 7, 2016 barryb agree about Mark Hills. Very good judge of pace but often goes through lean patches simply because he doesn't get quality rides often. Masa Tanaka a big improver this season. THE TORCH

Not referring to the new starters - a couple of those mentioned in the first four responses on this thread have had plenty of rides - over 5,000 in fact and have strike-rates of roughly 1 in 20 and 1 in 18. You might say it's because they don't get the rides that the top jockeys do, but as someone said, there's a reason for that. gubellini 4,004 Report post Posted December 7, 2016 The Crucible great quote from the legendary jockey the late Pat Eddery 11 times English Champion Jockey. " Being a jockey is 50 per cent what you do on the course and 50 per cent off it.If you don't manage those relationships well, particularly in times of disappointment, you'll be finished." If you're riding in NZ are you aren't making headlines and you've had more than 100 rides you've got problems. If you're riding in the South Island or Central Districts and not riding a lot of winners consider yourself lucky to be employed. A lot of riders in NZ are woeful.
