Peter Harrop 226 Report post Posted December 6, 2016 Am I right in looking at these stats that racing betting has declined and sports betting has increased? Are these stats representative of recent trends? Maybe we are now starting to see the effect of Trackside going to Sky TV (ie a halving of the potential audience for racing)? I thought at the time it happened it would take a few years before lesser coverage started to impact. The old 'out of sight, out of mind' scenario. Leggy 4,005 Report post Posted December 9, 2016 Dear brent, From The Horse's Mouth Premiership leader Danielle Johnson had a frustrating day at Trentham last weekend but might make amends at Te Rapa on Saturday. Johnson is riding in eight of the nine races at the premier meeting at Te Rapa, with three of her mounts opening as favourite and three others the second favourite in final field betting. Just one of her mounts opened at more than $6. However, the Cambridge jockey will be aware that she looked to have an equally good book at Trentham, which was another premier meeting, but failed to ride a winner. Five of Johnson’s mounts at Trentham were either favourite or second favourite but her best placings were a brace of seconds and three fourths. She had a more encouraging day at Hastings on Thursday, with three wins and a second from six rides, putting her five wins clear of Chris Johnson at the top of the premiership. Danielle won a stack of big races last season, including seven group races and the Karaka Million, but has yet to win a group race this term. That might change at Te Rapa, where she will partner Stolen Dance in the Group II Cal Isuzu Stakes (1600m) and Chenille (pictured) in the Group III Skycity Hamilton Waikato Cup (2400m). She will also ride Thee Auld Floozie in the listed J Swap Contractors 1400. Johnson has had a good strike rate on both Chenille and Stolen Dance. She has had four wins from five rides on Chenille and a win and two Group I-seconds from three rides on Stolen Dance. Stolen Dance will be the defending champion in the Cal Isuzu and had a wonderful season last term, with four wins, three seconds and a fourth from eight attempts. Her four starts in Group I company produced three seconds and a fourth but she was below her best in two starts last spring and was given a break. She had a trials run last month and it would be a surprise if she was not competitive this weekend. Chenille, a stayer of real promise, is trained by Tony Pike, who has a good second string in Counties Cup placegetter Jiayuguan. Chenille opened as a $4.20 favourite for the Waikato Cup with Lizzie L’Amour, a newcomer to open company, at $4.40. Lizzie L’ Amour has yet to race outside rating 75 company but the Zabeel mare is highly rated by trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman and will be racing in blinkers for the first time. She also represents a form stable, with Baker and Forsman winning a race at Ellerslie on Wednesday, four races at Hastings on Thursday and another two at Tauranga on Friday. Kiwi Influence At Hong Kong International Meeting Five New Zealand-bred gallopers will compete in the international races in Hong Kong on Sunday. Surprisingly, three of the Kiwi-breds are in the 1200m Hong Kong Sprint, headed by veteran Aerovelocity (pictured), who won the race in 2014. Aerovelocity, who has been a Group I winner in Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore, has a second New Zealand connection in trainer Paul O’Sullivan. An eight-year-old by Pins, Aerovelocity would probably need everything to go his way to have a chance of a repeat win. But he has an inside barrier and has been placed in his two leadup races. Falkirk gelding Amazing Kids and Sandtrap eight-year-old Super Jockey will also tackle the Sprint. Amazing Kids, who will be ridden by Joao Moreira, has won five races in Hong Kong. He was named Cousin Colin in New Zealand and had a win and a second in two starts for Awapuni trainer Lisa Latta. The likely favourite for the Sprint is Hong Kong galloper Lucky Bubbles, an Australian bred by Sebring. Savabeel gelding Flame Hero, who has won seven races in Hong Kong, tackles a strong field in the Hong Kong Vase (2400m) while the Pins gelding Packing Pins contests the Hong Kong Mile. Ironically, Benzini, the sole New Zealand-trained runner at the meeting, is Australian-bred. Benzini , who gained a late invitation to the Vase, is trained at Hunterville by Adrian and Harry Bull and regular jockey Rosie Myers has the mount. The Tale Of The Cat gelding has won 11 races, including the Group II Brisbane Cup (2400m) but will be challenged by a quality international field, headed by defending champion and Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Highland Reel. Rebel Dane and Takedown, the two Australian-trained horses racing at Sunday’s meeting, tackle the Sprint. Racing Safety Development Fund Racing Minister Nathan Guy has announced new funding of $697,193 from the latest round of the Racing Safety Development Fund. The grants are made available from the Racing Safety Development Fund which provides $1 million annually to racecourse safety across two funding rounds. Funding is matched dollar-for-dollar with contributions from racing clubs. This season's first funding round has supported a wide range of infrastructure projects including replacement running rails, an equine ambulance, a replacement stable block, and a greyhound starting box canopy. “The fund plays an important role in improving the safety of the racing industry for animals, staff and the wider public. In many areas these facilities are widely used by the community throughout the year.” The Minister also announced the reappointment of Penny Mudford as Chair of the Racing Safety Development Fund industry working group. “Penny has extensive governance experience in the public and private sectors as well as strong mediation skills.” Since its inception in 2007/08, the Racing Safety Development Fund has provided around $9 million to projects which improve safety and upgrade facilities in the racing industry. There are around 140 active racing clubs and nearly 70 racecourses around the country. The next funding round for the Racing Safety Development Fund opens for applications on 15 February 2017 and closes on 31 March 2017. The thoroughbred clubs which gained funding in the latest round have all been informed. The red ink is being created in comparison to last years red ink, and the year before's etc. If you did the comparisons over the last five years you'd need to invent a new shade of red.
