Rueperel 11 Report post Posted June 24, 2016 Turning back the clock to the 50/60/70s periods we had sme real characters. Bill Broughtons approach to dealing with things was pretty straight forward, if he brought a badly beaten fav back to the bird cage he would enter to a hostile reception he would just put his thumb up to his nose which always did little to quell the situation. The next race they all rush into the tote and pour the money on Bill. All was forgiven. Now Keith Nuttal had a much different approach in the same situation - he would send a message to them not quite found in the new testament. They would send some back of a type only heard at Dog Trials and of course the Stewards usually got caught in the crossfire, but were fairly lenient on Keith as some of them had children and the odd mistress. Ronnie Taylor it was rumoured collected whips by the look of some of his horses he brought back to the birdcage thought he was fairly proficient "he didn't get off the horse they were trying to get away from him". Women wowed over him but there was never a strawpoll taken from his mounts for their opinion. Max Skelton - He like his brothers looked quite tall for Jockeys when they were standing on a chair. Only an idiot would protest against Max in the stewards Room as soon as he uttered the killer punch line such as "In the fullness of time this will be proven" it was all over. He should have been a Barrister - he would have got Mussolini off and given Community Service 71/2 hours. Neville Cowles - Another trick cyclist, always arguing with Ray Burgess the starter about the definition of ready steady go. Neville always felt it wasn't fair when Ray said Go when he was still about to enter the stalls. Ray and self tried to get Neville to give up smoking - told him it would stunt his growth and wouldn't be able to play the piano (if we stretched his fingers) as a career after his boss retired his good stuff of Dhow and Shudup there wouldn't be anything left. But there was - he took over the pub at Governors Bay and took up training - pretty good approach had some goodish ones such as Placido. Yes they were all individuals and great blokes - not the same today - all groomed to say the right things - that's progress I suppose - What do you think?? gubellini, elbow and Tinkerbelle
