eljay 1,720 Report post Posted February 7, 2016 Another holiday weekend - crashes/deaths galore. Why? Are we getting to become worse drivers? Are our roads inferior in quality to days of yore and do we blame the government for shoddy/lack of maintenance? Do we blame the ever increasing inflow of immigrants who are perhaps inferior drivers or who are clogging the roads with the ever increasing influx of vehicles which our roading system just cannot handle? Or is it a combination of all these factors. They have tried lowering the tolerance factor over the holiday periods with it appears nil effect. An interesting figure would be deaths per 1000 vehicles compared to say 5 or 10 years ago. I think we are all aware of the huge increase in vehicular traffic over the last decade. barryb 2,064 Report post Posted February 7, 2016 The road toll has been getting lower for a long time now. I think its a lot like EQ's, Mass Shooting in the US, & anything North Korea, they are headline grabbers and readers expect long weekend road toll info. Its been happening for donkeys years, just hasn't got the instant media coverage it does now.
Uriah Heap 481 Report post Posted February 9, 2016 I reckon a big reason for the lower road toll will be that the car designs are far superior to what they were. I recall the old rust buckets we used to get around in, with no seat belts in the back.
