Manual starts Ellerslie today.

You will have to excuse my ignorance on starting gates, but why is manual starting gates as against non manual starting gates a disgrace?

Sure, NZ racing is on the slide but what the hell has that do with manual starting gates.

Race 2 was a ragged start but I have seen many starts like that with non manual gates, since then the starts have been as good as you would see on any raceday.

I'm sure some just whinge for the sake of whinging.

The gates are always checked before the races begin.Perhaps this procedure needs to be reviewed so the chance of an ongoing power failure is minimise.I am not whinging but all aspects of racing should be as professional as possible.

Thanks Pilli ! Must confess the starts at Ellerslie were far more even than I predicted! If the Greens ever got into power they would probably ban racing.Might surprise you to know that I am not really a whinger.I was virtually the only person in New Zealand not to whinge about Mark Du Plessis and his ride on Bounding in the fillies Guineas Race at Riccarton last season. This is because I was a trackwork rider for 15 years and understand what can go wrong with horses.I currently have shares in six horses and you will never hear me whinge about their jockeys.I am not a whingeing punter who speaks from his pocket! So Pilli can you make me the non travelling reserve?!

Pilli if you have ever been an owner have you ever whinged about an account. When I get an account I don't even look at the itemised version.I look at the balance and cheerfully pay the same day.I am one of the 14 finalists in the Christchurch Casino N.Z. Trotting Cup Survivor Competition. After Round One at Addington on Friday I am ranked second. If I am eliminated in the next few rounds because of a perceived bad drive I will not whinge .This is because of the 12 survivors I am the only one who has trained a winner and understands what can go wrong in a race.I have the biggest private collection of racing books in N.Z.If I want to add to it I never whinge about the price! I am a whinger-yeah right!!!

Getting back to the origin of the thread

Manual starts with those Ellerslie gates is still a bloody sight more desirable than those old dunger gates that most of the rest of the Country operate with.

It is about time Santa Claus and his mates at Petone updated the gates around the place.

(Oh and don't worry about the Coast boys - we paid for our own - NZTR must have overspent on pies and sausage rolls that week and couldn't help out)

They can also become barrier shy when a gate swings back at them or when a gate doesn't open or doesn't open properly.

Anyway I think we agree - new ones required throughout the land where those old one remain.  The Otago Southland ones have a special trailer and ours go on a transporter so moving them is not an issue
