This is a great comp - so please don't think I am moaning. Rather an observation that if a NZ racing site focuses more on aussie racing than our own - we really are in trouble. -

This would be more constructive if you read my posts. I told you I have nothing to do with BGP. Never deposited any funds or been to an event with them. But I think they are good for the game. You are bitter and twisted about them - that's fine - albeit slightly unhealthy probably. But don't tell me I need them to get through the day. And I have no problem if more groups are formed or whatever I told you in my previous posts that there are deals done. I have seen that directly - know lots of punters who get looked after by the TAB in various ways. I've met and bet with lots of senior TAB guys. But even the really high turnover guys get knocked back on fixed odds bets sometimes. Or restricted on amounts they can bet. And guess what - it's how the world works in all betting activities. Ever had a host in Vegas ? They look after people who bet more than others. Same in business with negotiated prices for bigger customers. Rebates on turnover. Etc etc. Have a fun day punting.
-
Why don't you set one up then ? You seem to have plenty of grievances against BGP. Did they turn down your membership application, or yell too loudly in your ear one day on-course. ? I don't really get the negativity. And to think any "deal" they get with the TAB influences the TAB accepting a bet like you have been talking about is pure fantasy. Big punters, owners etc etc have always been able to ask for odds, or get rebates, or be looked after in other ways. And so they should.
-
Reread my post mate. Where did I say it was fair ? I actually said it can be draconian how they apply fixed odds restrictions. I know several trainers and owners who run into this all the time. I just said it wasn't BGP's fault. More particularly I was pushing back on your anti BGP sentiment and dislike of people having fun on a racetrack. Hope that was good for you
-
I have no association with BGP but there are bits of that Torch which I don't get. 1. I have hollered plenty of times on a a racetrack (and Casino and at Football matches come to that). I go to all of them to have fun. Other people having fun doesn't annoy me - sad if it does you. Tripling your money is also a bit of a feat for most. 2. The intangible of BGP you ignore - it gets people to the races who may not otherwise go. They are interested in betting and horses (and not just drinking like many of our big days - not that there is anything wrong with that). So long term it is surely giving the industry a boost even if only a % of them stay interested ? Looking round most race tracks all I see is people who have been doing it for years ... and they are dying. I entirely agree that fixed odds limits can be draconian. But I don't see that is BGP's fault

How good is this

You cannot shift these meetings away from Riccarton when they have full bookings for Xmas at the races - which as Pam points out gets decent attendances and has corporates booked months in advance. I totally get the frustration for trainers and owners etc - but I think in this instance we have to accept that and look at the bigger picture ??
-
Your other examples don't make McGraths transgressions ok. As you yourself say - he has disgraced the industry. And it is an industry which really needs good press. As others point out your "can't do much harm" comment is rather telling. He can rehabilitate and come back into the industry after serving a sentence. This is a terrible look for the industry - in a few ways.

Thank you mate. I've been reflecting on how much Cubes loved helping people and charity and the industry. It was very difficult to buy a drink when you were out with Nigel. He told me a story one day that he was flying back to NZ after finishing his (very successful) career overseas in Finance. He had clearly done well and was wondering what his next steps would be. In the Air NZ magazine on the plane there was an article about native birds - the Mohua featured. He decided to help with conservation. After a few field trips he decided he could perhaps best help by raising money rather than trekking in the mountains At various times a good friend and I helped Cubes run punting syndicates to raise funds for his charity work (often in the Corporate box he used during Cup Week and which he allowed us to bring people too - we made sure Mohua benefitted from the face value of the tickets we "sold" - even though Cubes never asked for the $). Just a super bloke

Thanks for posting Scooby, I had heard yesterday from a close mutual friend of Cubes. Terrible news, especially after the passing of Cube's wife a couple of years ago. I feel terribly for their sons. For those of you commenting on Cube's sense of fun and desire for a laugh - I can attest that in person he was exactly the same. A great and generous character - full of mischief. And underneath it a highly successful person. A very sad time for many. RIP mate Col

The betting option is open to manipulation for sure - hard to imagine it is a big enough incentive to stuff up a chance at a major handicap though (or a top 10 finish or whatever) ?? Betting patterns and large bets would stand out in that market. Fair to say also that this horse looked the obvious leader. I am still mentally scarred by it winning a race at Riccarton on a dead (?) track one day running off the front and not being caught. I had rated it as no chance at all.

Good to see some balance here Torch - thanks for bringing it. Saturday was painful for all of us down here. I don't mow my own lawn so I have nothing to add on track preparation, but it is fair comment you make about the number of different courses which have had cancelled meetings due to the track. Riccarton is not alone in that regard. They may have got things wrong. But NZTR has an overarching responsibility here too. Lets see how the review pans out. There are elements of a witch hunt here which I don't like. Scooby I am in part referring to your comments here. We are dealing with people and their livelihoods. I have been around Riccarton for a long time. I have avoided any official capacity despite a nudge or two to do so - primarily because going there is one of my favourite pastimes. So I know Tim a little bit (and note we have had disagreements about some stuff in the past ). I also know many committee members and past Chairman and staff etc. I am well aware of some who want change or whatever. And perhaps this was a CJC issue. BUT can we have some balance that this Club has been through a hell of a lot in the last 12 years. The impact of the EQs was enormous. The Stand loss and subsequent fight has been a huge issue. Loss of GN meeting for covid and jumping numbers has a major impact at the CJC. And can we point out that the Cup Carnival has developed into the premier weeks thoroughbred racing in the Country. Attendance numbers grown etc and crowds having to be limited due to Police and wowsers (and I don't need to be told it is people there for the party - who cares - at least they are on a racecourse and spending some money. And some of them will develop an interest ). Just my 5 cents worth over a post cup week coffee. I am not giving the CJC a pass on this. But nor am I prepared to get out the pitchfork and join the mob.

A training win in Cup Week is not to be sniffed at Pam - always enjoy you kicking a goal at Riccarton, and having a catch up with a couple of people who are around your stable.

delighted to see that Pam !!!

How Long Can The NZ Cup Stay A Group 3
chelseacol replied to scooby3051's topic in Thoroughbred Cafe
That's the point Tom. Agree. It is a carnival - lots going on. A party and a big show and events etc etc . And the wonderful ability to go to the races day after day in a super atmosphere. Doesn't happen in NZ anywhere else. The old Cup week in Auckland which I loved had no public perception in Auckland. Love Hawkes Bay spring carnival - but its over a long period.
