Plenty of Kiwi money being spent at the sale, especially by Dean Hawthorne ( about 10 purchases so far). I know Dean buys a lot for a Victorian outfit but they usually note that by putting Vic by Dean's name in the results. This year it is all NZ. But Te Akau, Roger James, Cambridge Stud, Stephen Marsh and few others are all buying.

For me this is a classic case of forgetting who came 2nd or 3rd in some key races. If I had been asked, prior to their announcement, who Hilal was I would not have been able to answer the question. I think it will depend on the mares served by each, Arbernant. I'm a fan of King of Comedy and Novara Park heavily supported him but with a lot of middle distance types. Plenty of Jakkelberry's. Nothing wrong with that, but it will not support early runners. KoC himself did not run as a 2yr old. The progeny I will be interested in are those out of Showcasing mares. Showcasing and Kingman are very similar, genetically. From his first crop there are 4 foals from Showcasing mares. There are a couple from Makfi mares which should "click" quite well. Circus Maximus ran at least 2 times in stakes races at 2 over 1600 meters, for a third and a fourth. He won a non stakes at 2 over 1600 meters. His female family is the same as Noble Bijou so you would expect a few middle distance/staying types. But I'm sure he will have covered some sprinting type mares so they will not necessarily all be middle distance/stayers. I think both potentially could throw a good two year old but more likely there will many more 3yr+ types and either could throw up a Derby horse.

I agree with you chknsmack --the industry needs big risk takers and WS can afford to take a few. Just looked at Super Seth's figures : Year 1 covered 143 mares, Year 2 109 and Year 3 only 65. Last season's figures are not up yet.

I remember reading a comment from Mark Corcoran about Verry Ellegant. He said if she had gone through a yearling sale she would not have sold for much because she did not look very good at that stage of her deleopment.

Thanks for the Tom Wilson link, Leggy. Really interesting stuff. I was surprised at his comments on Irish black type. My understanding is/was that there were significantly more black type races in Ireland as a percentage of races run compared to elsewhere. I obviously had that wrong.
