  1. And you cannot just make shit up!!!! Assano never rode Slipper Island at Cambridge. It was also only just beaten a Neck x Nose in that race so the inference that it had 3 legs is close to slander.
  2. NZTR does not employ commentators. TAB/Entain
  3. Did attend. It looked a good crowd to me, compared to previous Day 1 crowds. Good number of young people also.
  4. Might be a touch higher. 82 in Oz suggests some black-type?
  5. Very few public holidays work well in NZ these days, especially if not aligned with Oz and on Monday. Poor turnover, and increased costs for everyone involved - raceday staff, stables staff, catering, etc.
  6. The track presented for last meeting was unacceptable - poorly maintained and prepared. That will not be a surprise for anyone who has been to the course in past few years. Avondale JC has the power to transform NZ racing via their assets.
  7. International ratings for NZ 2yo's last season Tokyo Tycoon 110 Pignan 109 Ethereal Star 108 Ulanova 107 The Karaka 2yo was rated NZ's best 2yo race by international handicappers.
  8. IMO Meeting should have been abandoned and new entries called for - preference to those already entered.
  9. People please... For a race, the camera is finish line only, one pixel wide, taken thousands of times. These combine to make your photo finish picture. It doesn't matter where the line is placed on the picture...it is always at the finish line. Example below
  10. On a wet day, at the same time he also loses his inside rein, he miraculously flips his whip upside down. All inside the final 50m. "Skilful, deliberate and intentional"
  11. Yes, the oxymoron is he would have been better to have dropping it when he fumbled. The standard of NZ stewarding and JCA is highly questionable. A senior jockey forcibly restrained their mount to miss a placing two weeks ago - not even a question.
  12. Agree Baz. From what I can gather he fumbles the whip before his final strike, regathers, and hits with upside down whip. Not even a strong hit. No malice. no intent, BUT 3 month suspension. Another very questionable decision from RIB and JCA.
  13. Finite supply of funds. Turnover drives prizemoney, although assets could change things in Auckland example. But for too long we have put on an unappealing product for punters. Racing in Oz not that easy. We had one last season with a syndicator, won $70k in prizemoney and we lost money! That said having one greatest racing jurisdictions on our doorstep is not the worst conundrum.

Good on Cambridge. They took on the project in an environment of uncertainty and animosity. You would have been appalled by what trainers had to use previously! The industry acceptance and success of the surface suggests no doubt something like suggested above will form part of a Greenfields site - whenever that may be?
  15. Not much different to coming out bucking? Maker of its own demise
  16. Our horse pulled-up poorly on that Riccarton track 2 weeks ago (27/3) and has probably run its last race. It is all very well stating it was a better betting product that day but at what cost? There has to be a balance. And not condoning Saturday's surface.
  17. So saving now equals robbery? Where do you think the funding for extra/split races comes from? When the races moved to Saturday (when Derby was moved) and stakes were raised, where did that money come from? And how about when an extra meeting is added? And don't forget 12 months ago the TAB was virtually insolvent. Having a reserve (savings) for a rainy day might not be that stupid?
  18. Maybe some wires crossed here? Radio was a TAB asset. And the rumored annual losses were "substantial". Nothing to do with NZTR
  19. Personal experience. I don't bet millions, not even close. Every account has been closed or restricted into oblivion. And most accounts never reached 5 figures. It is laughable. I will forward to a journalist one day, if I can be bothered. They are only interested in high turnover losing punters. They only return a mere fraction to the industry of what a tote can. Hong Kong and Japan are arguably the most successful jurisdictions in the world. The common denominator is no corporates. And UK is an example of how the corporates, given virtual free rein, have hamstrung a mighty industry, in perpetuity. But to each his own. Enjoy your bonus bets
  20. Yes, NZ TAB does have restrictions but, in terms of NZ Racing, they are far less restrictive than Australian corporate bookmakers - Win an they will close you down. Aus corporates are only interested in high turnover, losing punters and they are the scourge of our industry.
  21. Possibly. We had a Sunday race meeting that fell after a Public Holiday Friday a few years back and it was a disaster turnover-wise. It appears the discretionary/entertainment $ doesn't stretch that well over a long weekend. Remember also that Australia turns over more than NZ on our races now. But again not losing sight engaging locally, or the programming debacle this season.
  22. Oz sales date changes dictated the move of Karaka and Millions. Apparently will happen every 4th year. But not defending the Matamata Monday or the programming for this weekend. Public Holiday Mondays have been in decline for years (turnover and attendance), hence not as many these days. Turnover must be maximised to have any chance of increasing prizemoney. But also need to address the regions and keep the sport nationally relevant. A balancing act.
  23. That isn't correct. And here are a few examples of why. 1. Jockey's knowledge of the rules. Elliot is quoted on Weigh In saying something like "OP squeezed me out with competitive riding". So what of being the prescribed distance clear when shifting ground? 2. Possibly intimidating situation. Elliot and mum against OP Bosson and J. Richards. 3. Jockey's head space. Having made a series of errors which probably cost winning, is he really going to go to war for chancing a tight run which might gain him 3rd? 4. Not relevant in this situation, but maybe they are content with 4th.
