  1. If you have 8 horses off the front and 5 off the back, you have a 38% chance of drawing the second row. All Stars runners have a 38% of drawing the second row, just like everyone else. All Stars have 21 runners. 38% of 21 is 8. Exactly the number of second row draws they received. Nothing unlucky about it at all. Just simple maths, and the law of averages.

I bougt a beautiful mare that is a 3/4 to Aimees idol for only 200. Had another go at racing her for a 4th but her heart wasn' in it anymore and that was fine by me as I mainly got her for breeding. Have to say she is the spitting image of her grand dam eight carat and has a lovely nature. So I for one am a very happy purchaser.

  7. The international market will only stand up for so long. The breeders need a domestic market to ensure those horses that are traded have a reasonable start. Can’t rely solely on yearling / RTR sales. So in the short to mid term it might survive..but long term, its a no go zone. How many horses sold internationally fall through the cracks? How many nice horses are sold to HKG and are never heard of again? How many beautiful yearling colts are sold to Asia only to end up in the rubbish bin.... How many are sold offshore who have at least scored some black type here to help the pedigree page. Also, as we’ve seen recently, the Aussies are only interested in pedigree page..and perhaps performance. They (or should I say, those dedicated followers of fashion) are stallion snobs...and I’m seeing something similar here... Also with South Africa coming on line for HKG, it’s only a matter of time before the NZ product is usurped if there is no domestic racing industry...Also the South African horses will be a lot cheaper to buy....I’ve spent good time in ZA and their intention is to supply the Gulf and HKG...so there is too much at stake for the domestic industry to fail.....so Stud masters WAKE UP!

  8. Unlucky alright. But if you want to talk about unlucky just look at Bonnie Joan’s draws this season. Sure, some have been because of preferential draws but she couldn’t catch a break all season.

    Trackside HK race 1

The TV pictures of the first race at Hong Kong last night was poor. The leader at the entrance to straight disappeared behind the divis for the 2nd race caption and reappeared at the post in 2ND. At no point was it in view down the straight. On the reply the caption was reconvigered slightly so the horse could be seen better. Very very poor. I know the divis next race are important but how bought here and now showing the leader in the race at hand down the straight

jack drove horses for my family back in the 70's. Nice guy, damn good driver, and he always brought you back a horse that you could have raced again the next day!

It's no different than any other business. A whiteware company has a freezer fall off the forklift when unloading and breaks it is only sold for parts but then make up for the loss on the sales of others. A farmer buys a working dog and put time and money into breaking it in only to find that isn't interested in working sheep, it gets given away as a pet. It's just a numbers game, and the minutes the hammer is knocked down your expenses are finished and it is someone else's turn.

But the point is the site did its job and found a home for the horse, obviously the vendor just wanted out of the horse or the reserve would not have been so low. Also most of the horses on there haven't had a yearling or weanling prep they are just put on the site as is , so someone has got to spend some dosh and time educating them to that level as well so you aren't comparing apples with apples if youre looking at the Auction house prices. Don't get caught up in the hype and BS of the GC MM sale or the K1 here its mostly BS. I agree some of the stud fees are quite high for what the end product is , but the stallion owner also has to make a quid.

Asbestos is a pretty horrible substance though Chevy, ask anyone suffering from breathing it in. Lead based paint is another.

  24. It was a hell of an auction. It was a mortgagee sale with the property having a GV of around $6 million. When the bloke woke up on auction day he would be hoping for the best to get out of a tight situation. Three genuine buyers, two who joined together to out last the third. His final few bids were probably resentment ones, to make the other two feel some extra pain in securing it. It was great theatre and well done to Tony and Des and the boys. And the vendor was that happy, he went and bought another farm the same day with the extra proceeds that surely had not been anticipated before the gavel fell. Only in bloody Cambridge

Surely you'd think most of the vendors would be satisfied , after all they set the reserve . What the vendor expected to get may be more relative to cost of production than selling on a site like Gavel which may be greater concern for being dissatisfied.

    New Stallions 2018

I don't begrudge anyone willing to stand a stallion or send a mare to stud best of luck to them. No ones holding a gun to ya head to send a mare, sane was said about Eighth Wonder and many others , I kind of like this guy's pedigree admittedly it's gonna be hard work getting numbers.

I would love to see a feedback section similar to trademe, would give buyers a little more confidence I recon. I have purchased two as potential jumpers, both been exactly what i was expecting so would have given both positive feedback, one was just too slow and the other having first run around tomorrow for me.

  30. Hi everyone I know this is the Thoroughbred forum but we are going to do something different this coming weekend. We are going to have a Crown Jewels comp here next weekend on Harness racings biggest day of the year.I hope everyone gets behind it for a bit of fun, there will be big prizes up for grabs also. To make it easy to score --- you pick one horse per race which has a fictitious $1 to win on it at tote odds, not F/O To add some spice you will need to pick the Quinella in Race 4 on top of your single race selection, so select a 2nd horse and the Trifecta in Race 9 on top of you single race selection so select two further horses. Trifecta can be in any order as long as you have the three correct numbers. In Race 4 and Race 9 the quinella and trifecta races your first number written down will be your win bet selection. Should keep it interesting right up to the final race.....and give even the back markers a chance of pulling of a win. Entries submitted like this R 1 No 3 R 2 No 7 R 4 No,1,2 Quinella Race 9 No 3,4,5, trifecta Enjoy the fun lets show the harness forum we can tip winners in their neck of the woods as well. I will try to get the fields posted here so everyone can view them to ...so we can all do some studying up on the form. $400.00 prize thanks to $250.00 from Yir Tiz who is off the scene at the moment recovering from surgery and $150.00 from me. First prize $250.00 2nd prize $150.00 3rd prize $50.00 Entries Close 10AM Saturday 2nd June. Scratchings go on to Favorite. Cheers Scooby.

    TrotTech HRNZ

Hi Rangi First of all thanks for your comments re the Trottech selections. i agree with you a rough day at Rangiora yesterday but it sounds as though you had a good go on Light Year Franco so well done. The tips for Saturday’s Addington Meeting were and still are on the HRNZ website - on race day you can find the Trottech information either on the home page banner or in the “News” section. Remember to hit “Latest News” and you will be able to scroll down and find the articles involving this information. Note: We are working on a punting section on the website that will make this information easier for you to find. We had quite a handy day on Saturday so it’s a shame you missed the post - Best Bets: Race 3 Tennyson Bromac - $3.10 & $1.50 (better odds available on Fixed odds) and Race 8 Cullens Joy - $4.50 & $1.90 (better odds available via fixed odds) both saluted the judge. Our value eachway bet - King Of Heroes placed 5th but went quite good i thought and isn’t far away from picking up a maiden victory. While our early quaddie selections came up short in the last leg - our suggested late quaddie did come in. If you had taken that suggested bet for $1 unit your total cost would have been $128 - your return was $1,130.30. Hopefully you had a bet at Invercargill on Saturday where our two bet bests - Fun In The Dark ($2.90) & James Butt ($3.40) saluted the judge, our value best bet didn’t end up paying much but is also saluted - Cast A Shadow - $3.60/$1.70 - Our Suggested late quaddie also made a tidy profit at this meeting. A bit about myself - I’ve been involved in in the Harness industry since i was a kid (some would still label me a kid at 22) - as a kid i used to go to meetings with my late granddad to either see the top class horses or support my uncles runners or horses my parents owned shares in. The horse Totally Different was one of the first my mum owned a share in - aswell as my family members having White Arrow(NZ Cup runner), Reklaws Chance and now enjoying the ride with Chase Auckland. i soon caught the racing bug and ever since my life’s been racing racing racing. In face at school when we used to do speech’s i would struggle. It wasn’t until i started doing them about Harness Racing that i was able to stand up and produce a full speech - a teacher actually had to stop me one time as i had gone way over the allocated time. During school i helped out at a range of stables and race nights - but a passion of mine was always race day form and tipping. i put it aside and decided to have a crack at driving and training and started my career with Peter Robertson at Templeton before heading to David Aiken in Melbourne - returning from Australia i’ve had multiple stints with Robert & John Dunn at Woodend - a 8 month stint with Brent White in Temuka and am currently training two horses (Black Art - going well & Tribeca - headache horse, has ability but not showing it on race day). I’m enjoying the challenge that comes with the Trottech role and the up and downs of tipping. (I’d love to tip 10/10 every meeting - but if i could do that i’d probably have a relaxed professional punter lifestyle like “Brodie” does - LOL Feel free to message me on Facebook/chat to me at the races/email me to voice your opinions on anything you’d like to see Trottech do - or anything you think we could add in/improve as i’m certainly not saying it’s perfect but i’d love to grow the readership and add in more information that every punter wants and needs to make some $$. Thanks very much Andrew Fitzgerald

  32. I am sad to hear about the death of Jack Carmichael. He was one of our best horsemen and it is another blow to our industry losing a gentleman like him. Jack drove a number of horses I owned and he always gave them every chance. My best memory of him was with the trotter Yankee Loch. The horse was talented but very headstrong, I backed it most starts when Jack trained him. Jack lined him up in the Rowe Cup but Yankee Loch was very fractious and caused a long delay. Finally, Jack got the horse to settle and when the tapes went Yankee Loch made a flier and bolted in. Spry Joker was another good horse I remember. RIP Jack. Passing of Jack Carmichael 29 May 2018 NZ HARNESS NEWS Popular and highly respected former Templeton horseman Jack Carmichael passed away last Wednesday aged 94. Carmichael only handed in his training licence six years ago and trained his last winner when Flaming Freida scored at Washdyke in May, 2011. Carmichael had 346 training wins in a career which spanned six decades, while he won 21 races in his last season of driving in 1988, for a career tally of 614. Carmichael started out as a right-hand man to Wes Butt at Mankind Lodge, but soon established himself as a top Canterbury trainer in his own right after branching out in the mid-60s. He had 19 winners in his third season of training, when the top Johnny Globe pacers Gay Robin and Chequer Board quickly brought him to the fore. Chequer Board won 23 races, most of them for Carmichael after starting out with Dave Jessop. By the early 70s, Carmichael had already won a New Zealand Cup with another Johnny Globe horse in Globe Bay, and a Dominion Handicap with the Johnny Globe mare Precocious. The latter went on to win the Inter-Dominion Trotting Grand Final in Sydney in 1973, the year she became a grandmother after an early accidental mating. The resulting foal was the All Gallant filly Over Fence, whose first foal was a very good trotter in Precocious Lad, a winner of over $500,000 in North America. Kaikoura Cup winner Micron was another top pacer for Carmichael in the 70s, while in the 80s he won a Rowe Cup with Yankee Loch, a Trotting Championship with Game Pointer and Jenner, and two Kaikoura Cups with Spry Joker. Game Paul and White Horse Pride were top trotters for Carmichael in the early 90s. Carmichael was also a gifted reinsman and won numerous features for other stables, notably New Zealand Oaks with Ar Miss and her daughter Armalight. Other Group 1 wins came with Chequer Board (Easter Cup), Berkleigh (NZ Derby), Hilarious Guest (NZ Standardbred Breeders Stakes) and Megatrend (NZ Sires Stakes), the latter in 1986 and not long before Carmichael was forced to retire from driving. Carmichael was the stable driver for Des Grice when he was in his hay day in the 70s and won numerous races with the likes of Don Lopez and Smokey Lopez, while Jascoe, El Guago, Glen Moria, Young Pride and Nardins Hall were other good performers he trained. Carmichael, husband of Dorothy and father of Wayne, was farewelled on Monday.
