    Well Done Chris Waller

Interesting summary but there is a much bigger picture here which NZers have probably never analysed...and it doesn’t matter If it’s CJW or Dan Dinkum For punters to invest they need good, strong, competitive fields. As we are currently experiencing here in NSW, field sizes are diminishing, owners are sending horses interstate to race...why? Several reasons....the costs are becoming prohibitively high. With energy costs skyrocketing those who once were part of a syndicate are now not investing because income now goes on daily cost of living expenses. Trainers are also moving interstate (David van Dyk, Grahame Begg are just 2 of the better known trainers) because they can’t attract their traditional owners or syndicators. Hence we have a contracting ownership scene where the big are getting too big. Multiple entries in one race manipulating the weights to suit....field sizes diminishing, false favourites and on a monotonous regularity the outsider gets the prize. Punters will only put up with this for so long ...then that dollar is diverted elsewhere. So as NSW racing is dependent on TAB/bookmakers turnover, where is the long term benefit of these mega stables? They are actually biting themselves on the bum because at this rate the great prize money offered is not sustainable. So, there will have to be an action which will limit the number of nominations from trainers....thus protecting the integrity of the handicapping system. Currently it’s open to legal abuse. See fields in Sydney this weekend for examples of what goes on... I intend to chat with Max Presnell as I can vaguely remember something similar in the 70s and Tommy Smith being accused of manipulating the system..... For those of you who now say “well, what about Weir?” Victoria has long been a better place to race horses because there are so many provincial & country outlets...and that’s how Victorian racing can withstand the Weir onslaught...but in NSW opportunities are not so abundant. There are larger Sydney stables that now venture out to places such as Bathurst, Dubbo etc simply because of the prize money. This invasion is now having a detrimental effect on country trainers & owners. This is a can of worms which I strongly believe the various racing administrators are watching but have no idea how to stop the train wreck. Whilst we’re not at the level of disaster as NZ racing, it has the potential to cause massive ramifications for all facets of the industry. If the punter doesn’t feel he’s getting a fair go, he won’t invest. And these mega stables are killing the Golden Goose.

ABC and XYZ will surprise though! Or is that EFG and QRS. Buggered if I know, all these abbreviations just can't get a line on them especially where you have JKL, & KLJ together!

  4. It's a stunning winter days here in Christchurch - not a cloud in the sky and 17 degrees they reckon later. Yes the council is hopeless, the roads are a mess, and Winston has done nothing this week except help his big breeder cheerleaders who should know better than to act purely in self interest in promoting him pre election ... But on the bright side we have a Friday meeting at the best racecourse in the country, and in a few hours I will be out of the office having a quiet beer and making some $ at Riccarton. Hopefully see a few of you out there. As I'm feeling happy - $100 prize for a quick competition today. Pick 5 horses at Riccarton in any 5 different races - imaginary $1 EW on each of them and highest $ total wins. In the event of a 2 way tie $ will be split, but if more than two people are equal tough luck - I will carry forward for another comp. If you pick a scratching also tough luck. All entries in by midday - probably won't be many so your chances are good. Any other issues or disputes I decide. I won't be updating during the day so anyone who cares to I welcome your input. Scooby I hope you don't mind this and if you can pin for today it will be appreciated. Good luck everyone and go the Blues in the Cup Final

What a ### this excuse for a journalist is. He has just ranked the list of all time All Blacks thugs - most of them have only made one misdemeanour (Kevin Mealamu Tana Umaga e.g.) and of course on his naughty boys list is Colin Earl Meads. Hahahahahahahaha . He has to rank alongside that oaf from Wales!! And surprise surprise, Rat doesn't even put Kevin Skinner on his list!!!!!

    New Stallions 2018

Fair point on data but..... I would suggest a much more competitive stallion market now, lack of truly dominant stallions (Snitzel the exception last couple of years, amazing seasons!), as well as the concept of shuttling stallions taking off more, another factor to take into consideration is that these top Australian stallions are serving 200-220 mares a season!, very hard to compete with that especially at distances 1600m and below. Savabeel has sired G1 winners of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Vinery Stakes, Turnbull Stakes, Queensland Oaks, Victoria Derby, Champagne Stakes, Queensland Derby so doing a very good job in Australia and all at a distance of at least 1600m. Other stats in Australia are 70% winners to runners and 8.2 stakes winners to runners, the game and the stallion market has changed so much since Sir Tristram's days, but does emphaisse what a remarkable job these stallions from the same line have done! )through in Lonhro now and Pierro into the future)

  8. They’d be happy I think to see all the non performing TAB’s go West, only if they have gaming should they feel secure(read growth strategy), with the constant drive towards their digital platform. I agree you certainly need a shop window. The trend I think is more towards “flagship “ stores, bigger and supposedly better. Look at the Post Office model. You have to expect this when the same hatchet man that closed the non feasible Post Offices is in charge of retail, even when there were vocal protests from the affected communities... it’s all about the $ in the corporate world.

  9. on top of other closures there appears to be a real trend here. Is this part of the cost cutting which can then be trumpeted by the powers that be ?? Easier than at head office eh? I'd be interested to understand the impact this has on revenue, brand awareness and the ability to drive future growth. Or are TAB outlets no longer needed at all ??

  10. Savabeel $100,000 last year and I guess private is above that now. Will be interesting to compare statistics between Sir Tristram, Zabeel and Savabeel. Zabeel mares are amazing. Something that really works. In Australia this season so far Zabeel's progeny earnings as a broodmares sire sits at $12.8m! Comparison below- Have used SW to runners with Savabeel likely to be around Zabeel's percentage as a few of those young runners are bound to produce SW as still only 2 or 3yos. Sir Tristram f:1217 r:1000 w:689 SW:130 = SW/ Runners 13% ZABEEL (NZ) f:1808 r:1525 w:1108 SW:166 = SW/ Runners 10.9% SAVABEEL f:1003 r:734 w:516 SW:74 = SW/ Runners 10.1%

    Interesting views from Gai...

Time between races would be the least of the problems for the sport. As for non race goers finding racing boring, well I"m a non moto cross goer and guess what I think it's boring . The elements of racing that hooked me in are the same elements that will make a non race goer a race goer in the future, that won't matter based on the time in between races.

That Time Test looks great. Is it just me or has anyone else noted that the Dubawi sire line goes with the Pins/Snippets mares? Awesome value also considering that Makfi has gone.
