    Weekend Comp

Thinking about running a comp this weekend on 5 races at Randwick or maybe a mix of a couple of places... 5 horses to run in the first 3,but there is a twist, if they run 2nd or 3rd you get double what they pay on the TAB,if they win you only get what they pay. Called Pick for place is Best .... details later...

  3. This morning's NZ Herald devoted 40 column centimetres to horse racing. It was all about the most famous horse race in the world with an estimated audience of 600,000, as they reported. So, think back to last Saturday when the TAB had betting on five races from Aintree. The sixth race was the Grand National. You got it! They did not offer betting on the world's most famous horse race. Somebody has to apply a blow torch to the rectal area of TAB management. This is totally unbelievable. Their argument, which is as weak as urine, will be that they had more than 24 starters. For God's sake; they have spent huge sums developing a fixed odds system that can accommodate a field size of up to 200 starters, or even more. Look at the golf betting. Okay, they could not accommodate quinella or trifecta betting with a field in excess of 24. Just go win and place. Here was a great opportunity to boost the industry's income and it was let go.

And unfortunately you will not fix the problem by public transport either. Most Aucklanders cannot go from one area of the city to another area without transferring from one bus to another bus, and of course they do not connect so long waits can be experienced, especially at the weekends and public holidays. People on the North side of the bridge have been told they will be contributing to Rapid Rail the same as the southerners yet there is no rail whatsoever north of the coathanger. The city is really at crisis point transportwise due to the "she'll be right mate" attitude of the politicians past and the "buggered if I know what to do" stance of the present ones. Aucklanders are presently saddled with taxation simply because it is the only answer the left wing can come up with, sadly though it is not an answer. Auckland is badly laid out and present developments are not helping this, and also it's infrastructure is unable to cope with the flood of immigration the government has sanctioned. Until the roads, the public transport, the schools, the hospitals etc. etc. etc. can handle the present mess then they should be putting up the "Sorry Full" signs!!

  6. Hence the mention of the fixed odds system and using golf betting as a comparison in his post.

    Te Rapa sectional analysis

Here is the free link to the Te Rapa sectional analysis April 14. Hope it helps you find a few winners. The horse that ran the fourth fastest last 600m all day fresh up could be one of them as he won second up last campaign. Many will be fronting up again on April 28 too.

    NZ bred racing series

If there is one issue that needs looking at within the industry it is how the NZ series rewards participants. Firstly think of what the purpose of the series is and how it actually works. Presumably the purpose is to support the NZ breeding industry and thus ensure the industry becomes robust enough to stand on it's own without having to resort to importing greyhounds . This makes sense as the sudden downturn in Aus. breeding has proven. How is it actually working? I do not have actual figures but my guess is most of the money put forward for the series is shared within say six major players. It is not unusual to see the same kennels chase the NZ series through all the regions and thus only a small amount of participants are rewarded. There is some merit in that but surely the intention was to promote and encourage people to breed dogs not just support and enable the bigger kennels to dominate. A far fairer and productive system was the old one where every NZ bred winner got a bonus. The big Kennels of course would still get the lions share but near every participant would have a chance every meeting. Maybe not exact the same as it was before but a system that gives all NZ breeders a realistic chance. The second point is the present system virtually excludes some dogs from having any kind of chance. Take the novice series where a maiden having it's first start may have to compete with a dog that has won over twenty races and say $80,000. That is crazy. Have a look at the all of the series races and see how many maidens actually get a go at it. The novice races are full of the stagnating class one dogs. Same applies to a lesser degree in c1& 2.

  13. It's funny how most owners will say they're the backbone of the sport. Without them, no punters, no racing, no this, no that, none of the other. Punters will say they're the backbone of the sport. Without them, no money, no horses, no racing etc etc etc. The clubs probably think they're the backbone, as would many corporates and sponsors. At the end of the day, that's all bullshit. Every group needs every other group, none can survive without the others, as with any one cog missing the whole wheel grinds to a halt. If there's no owners and/or horses they'll be no sponsors either, as they're looking for a return too, just like every cog in the wheel.

  15. Agree, mile racing at Addington is a no go. Also not worth spending large amounts of money to alter the track. Simply put, the Jewels should never be held at Addington or Alex Park. It will dumb down the whole series , remove the carnival atmosphere and make a great concept ordinary.

Quite so, GOM, but a lot of people down this way thought that their insurance policy was guaranteed. One never knows where money is concerned. Anyway, a good result, and the correct one.

That sort of travel is commonplace to the Canterbury trainers hoping to get a start for their dogs at either Forbury (4/5 hours) or Invercargill (6/7 hours).

Read what you have just said and there lies your answer, out of 42 races no c2 sprint this is poor can the 2 clubs not work together? Poor programming if you ask me. As for travel the South Island do it week in week out same distance time and all , some get money others don’t but they keep going back .

  21. Last Saturday; I went to tab.co.nz Then I clicked on racing. Then I clicked on today Then I clicked on M40 Aintree I saw no mention of fixed odds betting being available on race six. Although I have a very good knowledge of the intricate points of the Income Tax Act 2007; things such as Fair Dividend Rate and other arcane complexities, my intellectual grunt is inadequate to comprehend the TAB's web site. I will use a moistened flannel to wipe the remains of the omelette off my face.

  26. I'm going to say Perhaps it might be good for Harness, in fact all codes if it unshackles each of them from NZRB overburden. Growth in NSW gallops has been phenomenal under his and V'Landy's direction. The same cannot be said with respect to Harness racing which is losing support at a near terminal long term rate. Take out Harold Park money which has gone to Menangle's infrastructure and reserves and i would say they are in plenty of bother. Was told recently that Harness racing has been well and truly overtaken by the Dogs and that their gambling market share is around 12%. Menangle races on Easter Monday ran for stakes of 7500, i think that says a lot about the state of Harness racing in Ozzie but that's just my summation of things.

The winter of our discontent By Suze Winter is upon us along with much discontent and stormy weather like the monster that ripped up the country this week removing roofs, upending trees and cutting power to a quarter of Auckland’s homes. In the aftermath complaints were made that civil defence had failed to warn us of the destructive power of the impending super storm. In similar fashion, this storm brews its own ugly dark clouds and we got no advance warning of its destructive power either. The fierce winds shriek and buffet us as we cower in our seats, knuckles white and eyes wide in disbelief. We are all trapped on the bus run by the current coalition government. This bus is lurching steadily off-course and inevitably we know we will end up in the ditch. Mutterings and grumblings about driver capability and road worthiness are not enough to stir anyone to get to their feet and challenge the driver. Meekly it seems, we accept our fate, shouldering the responsibility for the curse of MMP. Some of us put the blame fairly and squarely on Winnie for the current line up of largely inexperienced and naive politicians making horribly wrong decisions on our behalf. Large amounts of money have been spent unnecessarily on reports by experts to plot our route through supposedly imminent hazards. We are warned of the effects of global warming and plastic floating about in the sea killing marine life. None of us want to kill the planet or its animals and so-called experts hold opposing opinions on the reasons for temperature increase. Some politicians take a stance that justifies their existence but for others it’s a ploy to detract us from the real hazards needing attention. Nary a word is said about the changing face of our communities as immigration brings with it a culture totally incompatible with ours, and a great bunch of people prepared to work for money that is not a living wage in this country’s largest city, Auckland. Not to worry, there’s always the dole to help those kiwis forced out of work. As long as taxes are being paid by the new workers the government is happy because its coffers are being replenished. Election promises were made, most unfulfilled and some contradictory such as free driving lessons for secondary students, adding more vehicles to our already congested roads. Correction, that was just a bribe to get the youth vote. But what about the election promise not to introduce any new taxes, a promise about to be swallowed up by a new fuel tax? Our education professionals, mostly leaning to the left and now buoyed by leaders of the same persuasion, boast superior results. To dispose of any evidence to the contrary they immediately set about decapitating the threatening alternative of charter schools and removing national standards, a significant measure of their success or failure. Unions whine loudly into sympathetic ears, hands outstretched for their dues for getting this motley bunch seated on the throne. If they haven’t already disrupted transport or hospitals through strike action for more money it’s only because their plans haven’t quite reached fruition. We’ve not seen so many strikes in years and they’re not done yet. Auckland has become intolerably congested with hundreds of new cars added to roads each week. The solution, we are told, is to stop driving our cars and use the totally inadequate public transport system. To further force us off the road, new highways planned several years ago, with funding already in place, have been scrapped with the stroke of a pen. The latest nail in the coffin is the decision not to issue new oil and gas exploration permits. The glaring hypocrisy of this decision clearly not evident to the decision makers who will continue to travel in planes and cars powered by fossil fuels. The economic effect on the Taranaki community and the rest of the country is of zero consequence to them either. This self-righteous path will turn us into an environmental parasite on other nations where we purchase our oil and gas while bowing and scraping to countries like China with its environmental and economic global corruption. Twford announced on breakfast tv this week that NZ will lead the world in dispensing with fossil fuels. With no viable alternatives in sight this makes me wonder what other harebrained, irresponsible and economically disastrous idea they can come up with next. It’s a sorry state we are in less than six months after the driver leaped aboard with cheery wave and toothy grin. Now she is about to jump off into maternity leave we are expected to trust her invisible deputy who over 90% of us didn’t want a bar of at the election. Perish the thought that all is well, it’ll take some time to recover from this combination of manipulation and superb incompetence. They are like the Silver Ferns staring down the barrel of defeat while maintaining they can still win a medal on the back of poor performances. There’s already one heck of a mess for any sensible politicians brave enough to clean up after this lot have finished wreaking their havoc. Please, please let that be soon!

  28. Does it not concern you that Messara is only a Gallops man. Also, have the Ozzies been of great assistance to NZ racing when put in postions of authority? Appointing him to do the review as well as mentioning the 2003 Racing act in the same Pres release should be sending alarm bells to both Standardbred and Greyhound codes. I'll stick my neck out now and say that in time its going to be a free for all with each code going there own way and the NZRB being downsized and not running the abysmal show they are now with their monopoly.
