    Closing down NZ tracks

Alan Sharrock, amongst others, is calling for a reduction in the number of tracks in NZ due to the spate of racemeeting cancellations recently caused by inadequate surfaces. How will this help NZ racing? Forcing trainers to try and sell their properties and try to buy a more expensive property near one of the main cities where the few remaining tracks remain? Most will throw the towel in. Trying to say there are too many tracks in NZ is nonsense. Victoria has 67 tracks with a population of 5.7million. Stakes are $23,000 for provincial maiden races, $120,000 for Saturday metropolitan races. Crowds of 3000 are not uncommon at picnic meetings. I haven't counted how many tracks there are in NSW, but it is a lot. 4 tracks in Sydney alone. The problem in NZ is not too many tracks, it is not enough money. Until the entire industry is taken apart and put together again with a whole new structure, nothing will change. Winston Peters is not the saviour and never will be. To get more money flowing in, betting turnover must be increased. That will not happen as long as the TAB have a government-mandated monopoly. They offer a mediocre product and have no incentive to sharpen up their act. Once you let in bookmakers it creates competition and interest, and increases turnover. It is already possible to operate an account with one of the many Aussie bookmakers from NZ, so why not just accept what is already happening and make the most of it? As the rot continues more and more of the capable and ambitious jockeys will jump ship. Michael Dee, Daniel Stackhouse, Michael Walker and Cory Parish are already doing very nicely thank you. They won't be the last to make the move. And in the meantime nothing will change.

  2. No one said they didn't want to take Enzo's Lad to Wgtn rather concerns about the track were discussed EL was booked to travel a week before the race and Sam was booked before the fields were framed. As the trainer and part owner I can assure you it was on the radar before NZ Cup Week that was why we did not run in the stewards being mindful he would have to carry more weight for a Group3 win than a listed win. The result was very satisfying and rewarding Thank you

  3. Is that what your beloved National were proposing! NO? Anything will be better than what they did for the last nine years, so don't try and create something that has no hope of being announced.

  4. They have had plenty of years to do lots of things to stop NZ clients departing to greener pastures. The outcome is obvious to everyone bar them. They have absolutely no idea about innovation and are reluctant copiers. The only thing they ,as in NZRB, are outstanding at is paying over the top salaries to people who have little or no knowledge of racing/gambling.

  7. Well here is one all good 'Cafers will have an opinion on forsure.... And the answer apparently is 22,500 The 3yo filly purchased by a very hot and flustered Cubemeister at Karaka in 2016....lot 1282... (Thanks Kevin/Thanks Leo) qualified for the 3yo Million buckness and was all paid up and at rating 65 made the field and..... See you in the last @ Riccarton on Saturday...... Trainer made the call.....Cubemeister has never had a live ticket to the big dance before , and in all probability never will again , and woulda gone.... It does look like some pretty useful types running 'round in strong fields at Ellerslie on Saturday to be fair Interesting Factoids : #1.....If you win a Million dollar race @ Ellerslie ( dreams are free )your stakeness is $ 530,500.......That's about 53 percent Liz #2....If you win a NZD 22,500 race @ Riccarton ( dreams are free )your stakeness is $ 15,625 which is 69.4 perecnt recurring Chevy #3....In Foreign Exchange market terminology the word million is never mentioned.....it is the default unit of trade ......e.g if you want to buy 14 million New Zealand dollars you just say i wanna buy 14 Kiwi.... #4....Cubity and his plans for world domination may have to be on hold for another year......

  8. <Urgently review the operations and costs of the New Zealand Racing Board> This part of NZ First's Racing Policy would be the easiest, fastest and most effective start. A drop in costs of 15% would provide a lot of funds annually for direct benefit to the Industry. When takeovers happen in the Corporate World, the first thing done is a thorough review of the costs, especially back office functions. Winston should get that underway immediately. He will achieve one of two things by doing this. Either he will find additional funds or, he'll put to rest an assumption many many people have, that there is a bloated, expensively run NZRB/NZTR in place. He's on a winner either way.

There’s a progressive group of lads that have a punters club at Ellerslie with 40k ready to unload on course. This group all like a punt n beer but have issues with the TAB why aren’t they courting these boys instead of making things hard .The AU corporates are already beating the NZ TAB to these boys punting dollar by good incentives .Time to open up competition I think let’s hope Winnie has this as one of his priorities.

    Winstons big announcement...

All well and good O'man but while Winston might, on behalf of the Government, subsidise stake money, how are clubs going to maintain that level with falling attendences, falling breeding numbers and falling betting turnovers. No industry (read business) can survive indefinitely on handouts without bringing in measures to be able to stand on its own feet and the racing industry is doing precisely nothing to help itself in that regard at the present time.

I would like to put another 'slant' on it. No club has had less money to operate with, had dates stolen off them, their key races stolen too, yet what little money they do have, they obviously put into the track and for that I congratulate them.

Hi i am Exquisite Jewels very proud joint owner /buyer. Unfortunately she injured her tendon again after 13months rehab and had returned to trentham for one race. She is too valuable - 8 carat family to risk again racing. She has now tested in foal positive to stallion Power!! I am excited beyond belief. I rushed up to buy Game Duchess when put up for sale and she was withdrawn- rest is history. I am going to this years select sale to look only......yeah right.. good luck to all. Game Duchess has a yearling in book 1 be interesting to see what it goes for.

Since the schedule you're referring to dates from 1 August 2016, it's hardly "years". And what drivers "deserve" is neither here nor there (we all think we deserve more!). If there were a problem with the fee being too low, then we would see a shortage of drivers on a regular basis, yet as far as I'm aware that's not the case. If anything, the reverse seems to be true --- many younger drivers in particular are largely unemployed. It's also worth remembering that any increase in fees comes directly out of the pockets of owners (of whom there is a definite shortage).

  14. First off I hope you pick up the higher % at Riccarton ! I'm in this game for the dream not the $ - I would have voted go for it and have a throw at the stumps. And I would have got up there early - ripped up Auckland and had the time of my life having a starter. But I appreciate the pragmatic answer is R65 at home (having said that what do you get for starting in the Million $ race ?? For 10th ?) As someone else said it isn't the trainers call either. I am continually baffled by the way this industry works with trainers sailing on and doing what they like. While there is something about Lloyd Williams that I don't warm to - I kind of do like the way he runs things Good luck mate

  16. Awesome-0 Where is the equilibrium in N.Z. for breeding dogs. We all ready have to many dogs, hence 15 card races every week, pressure on rehoming agencys - how long will this last? Personally I don't see the ozzie dogs been the problem. If you have time/money/reasources then the sky is the limit hence the four big breeders in N.Z., 2 in the South Island and 2 in the North Island, as there is no cap how many litters one enity can breed. With the small one litter every 2-3yrs breeder been shunted out the gate and likely never to return which dissapoints me alot. You can look at it two ways: 1 - Good on them for taking the risks and going for gold Or 2 - We keep going down this path its going to root the industry Unfortunately I see option two unfolding in my opinion and I really don't like the look of it. Palmy used to be my favourite punt day but not anymore I don't bet on a Monday, with Thursday prefered or Sunday. N.Z. breeding has improved and the sprint-a-thon meetings have cut back with better breeding and some in part to the big breeders but they can use the best bitches and straws. Smarter breeding on the smaller breeders part is a must.

  17. So our esteemed Racing Minister will be making a "significant announcement" on Karaka Millions night....we wait with baited breath.... - Government will distribute millions in largesse because they love Racing ? - Govt assistance will include funding of new Strathayr tracks at Ellerslie and one other location....??? - New initiative race - "The Mount Cook" - limited to 12, entry cost $500,000. Purse $10m...?? - Saturday stakes minimum of $25-30,000 ??? - Tax relief for the Industry, a reduction in Govt tax take on betting....???? - Infrastructure Fund - Clubs can submit plans/costings for infrastructure upgrades for funding assistance...???? Any odds....???

  18. Might be simple but they need to find $20mil a year for starters there to cover what they are currently borrowing to cover the advance stake funding.

Totally agreed. The fact that these strategic clubs get paid a higher rate for meetings and they are gaurenteed that rate means that they dont need to encourage punters on course. For the industry to survive you need punters as well as the obvious tainers owners breeders. If clubs got a percentage of on course turnover it would mean that they would promote there race meetings more and try to get more attendance on course as at the moment it doesnt matter how many you get on course you are all paid the same within your classifaction as an Industry day. Of course the Strategic clubs get both a higher rate per meeting and a percentage of the tote. Every meeting and club need an incentive and a percentage off the on course turnover would be just that. The smaller clubs are getting paid less to run a meeting but there costs are the same and as you said the bigger clubs are sucking all the funds so the smaller ones are struggling.

But we pollys know our knee ,from ,our ankle ,from our leg and from our hip !!! After 82 winners from Cilic ,ridiculous time-wasting and silly stepping avoidng court makings RF decides to get out of there. I was betting on a broken toe-nail.......but no ,its a sore leg which a day later a slight strain of the hip or normal wear and tear. Let's blame it on the Tournament organisers shall we after the toys are thrown and wrist bands tossed away. Personally I thought the slight strain came from the exaggerated double fist-pumps at end of 3rd set. What a pussy ! I thought Cilics 82 winners deserved a bit of credit !

  26. The correct question should be "what is your B?" not who Plan B is a very intricate scheme, by the time I've arrived at my eventual destination (in my mind) any bad air at home is forgotten The scheme involves avoiding detection, changes of clothes, changing flights, train stations, buses the whole lot. I sometimes have a look at the place in google maps, have never been there, but it struck a chord when I was a teenager and it is my mental bolt hole. The planning is quite exhausting mainly because if I walk out, I never want to be found, so there

In my opinion one of the biggest problems(to late to fix) is that Te Rapa,Ellerslie and Trentham are not major training centres unlike Flemington and,Randwick.

A friend has a raise the flag gelding, very under rated stallion in my opinion, has had some good winners in Australia, broadside, yogi, civil disobedience, etah james and pathesia, had a few in nz raise you ten, princesses brook, flag the groom, looks like he doesn't get to many mares, but his progeny seem to stay well, and reasonably priced.

  32. horses for courses isn't it. Never warmed to Lachie. Thought Ian had a great voice. True story follows - bunch of us when we were young fellas did West Coast trot circuit after Xmas. Second day at Westport we were all broke before last couple had been run. Went back to town and got some $ (probably via our GF's in ChCh transferring $ via TAB accounts !). Had a box trifecta on the last race between the group at the TAB. Ian called races over radio and we didn't have one in the first 3. Result came up and we got it ! Few days later we went to Reefton trots on bus trip organised by local pub. On way back after races the bus stopped at a country pub and we were chatting to an older couple who were also on the bus. My mate blurts out how bloody hopeless Chambers is and tells the story above. The older guy says "yeah he's our son".....

  33. Here we can't get onto the NZ TAB website any more, they have blocked it for anyone out of NZ, but out of interest, do they offer a mobile app so that you can watch the races live on your phone? And do they offer a visa debit card that you can transfer your balance on to and access your money immediately? They hadn't last time I looked, but that is all available here in OZ.

    Well done Pitty

Many, many years ago (1974 or 1975) I had a student holiday job at the fruit and vege wholesale market in Invercargill. Many of the retailers were punters like me and one day someone said that he had a tip for a horse starting at Greymouth the following week. It was called Parilla and trained by an unknown new trainer called Michael Pitman...someone suggested we hire a plane and pilot and fly up for the day.Next thing four of us are flying over Fiordland and up the West Coast to Greymouth.I think Parilla ran third but we had a great day and then flew home. To this day I've NEVER hired asnother plane to get to a race meeting but we somehow must have known we were witnessing the beginning of a great career As an aside that night at one of the retailers homes I was introduced to what was for me high-stake euchre.....scary stuff for an eighteen year old

Passionate volunteers are a dying breed through the lack of gratitude and ridicule from the very people whom they are giving their time to help. Tracks! We waste to much time and money on these morons who sit in their offices at a computer all day calling themselves turf experts they have got to keep coming up with stupid ideas and pathetic reasons for "improving " our tracks otherwise we wouldn't pay them hundreds of thousands of dollars its bullshit! Get Back To Basics! our tracks are what they are , Our climate is what it is so lets just live with it , if it means putting sheep on your race track to improve the soil and root structure will lets do it, can't be any worse than what we got now . I think Murray Mexted said about the poor condition rugby pitch grasses that were ripping up at every scrum "IF ITS NOT ROOTED ITS ROOTED" Smaller Racing clubs need their one day in the sun (Usually Cup Day) put a huge effort into that I think its worth it for the industry , Clubs then must operate like a business to keep their heads above water, all parts of their operation must break even or make money so they can provide facilities for horses and tracks to race on if you are not making money then there is no money to spend on facilities or tracks , common sense would tell you that your Farming operation your training operation your catering/Function hire operation etc. all must perform if not Fix it or dump it , that's business

  40. We have probably got away from the original topic. I am well aware that a lot of people are making a lot of money from the re homing program. We have people flying around New Zealand checking in with councils for what reason I have no idea. But flights, accommodation and rental cars alone must add up to a heck of a lot of money. They need to get themselves in a room and come up with solutions, not added problems. I for one have said all along, we needed to build a world class, stand alone facility where dogs can go to begin with and then be fed through to the smaller adoption programmes . The amount of money we have spent on a band aid solution is ridiculous and I believe people should be held accountable for their inadequate judgement of this entire situation. My point is not to ban the Australian import, in fact, let them come over and race, but they do not race in our group races. It will slow the flow down of Australian imports. But we need to start finding a New Zealand based industry where the money stays in New Zealand, goes back into greyhound racing FOR New Zealand owners, trainers and breeders. I am sure if people had the incentives put in front of them knowing that every pup they produce may have the opportunity to race for good money, a lot more people would breed, instead of one litter, they may actually breed two per year. Its all about building an industry...... a kiwi based industry. And if this happens you may find we have high class rearing farms, break in facilities, all the extras that go with a sustainable New Zealand based breeding industry. In turn, this would add jobs and may even generate enough money to start planning for a world class retirement home for ex racing dogs. Imagine if we where actually the envy of our neighbours? Its achievable but we need to start now.

Trentham had to sell land to repay debt run up by Race who built a $9M conference centre at Awapuni but did not have the money to pay for the loan which they obtained to fund it. Prior to that Trentham went broke so joined Race and appointed two idiots to The Race Board who contributed significantly to Trentham's demise. So it was hardly a surprise when Race went belly up. .

Jess You find the sales addictive watching as do I. Whether you like Te Akau or not they have sponsored coverage since they have been shown live on TV and maybe without their initial sponsorship initiative we may not have the option of many hours of live viewing. Your criticism is totally unwarranted. A bit like watching the Olympics and complaining about the Coke Cola or Heineken marketing.

Firstly this is my first post on here. Ben has learnt from this drive!! He has, as he does every drive, watched the replay hundreds of times and discussed with us in detail what he did wrong, and what he will now do in the future. Ben does feel for the connections of Laytons Lass. Both Ben and I dont agree with the rule and Ben thinks his fine, which he is paying himself btw, should be paid to the owners of the affected horse in this situation. Ben's whole life is his driving, when he make a mistake he knows it and is the first one to admit it. He is young and learning and the only way we learn is when we make a mistake. He is hard enough on himself without the likes of Who Knows and Richie knocking him on a public forum. Before you want to knock a young kid learning in an industry he loves more than anything, just think how it affects him!!! I believe all the mistakes he could make on a racetrack would pale in compare to a grown man rubbishing a kid under a fake name on a public forum .......
