  1. Once again I want to bring this up. I had an email conversation with Jim when he was in charge several years ago. He thought it was a great idea and why hadn't it been thought.of before. He said he would bring it up at a boardmeetong. Don't know if he did. Some time after that I thought I would given the new welfare officer a chance to give his opinion on my idea. Never got a response to my emails which made me very cynical about how genuine GRNZ were about greyhound welfare. Out of sight out of mind. I think we need a fund set up to cover vet bills for when a race dog injures itself during a race. They put their bodies in the line every time they.go.out there. They deserve to be looked after when things go terribly wrong. As they do.. many injuries can be repaired I have about 4 retired ones at home that have broken hocks and one that snapped s front leg. All repaired. All now sound and most importantly.all happy. If it means taking a percentage of the stake money to fund this so be it. It would be a tangible way.of showing the WORLD that we really do give a shit about our dogs.

  2. False story, what are you referring to. Ive always thought its you who have chosen to be judge and jury,,shutting down some debate over topics being discussed in the media, while allowing others to be continued. Remember the mike breslin persecution you allowed because you said it was true. You are very selective.,and inconsistent. Ive always thought it may be because of legal reasons, but whatever. You referring to lynch mob is ridiculous. Don't worry about banning me. I'll give myself a permanent holiday.

    How about

Trouble on the 1st bend. How about 6 dog fields? About 5yrs ago Wanganui put forward 6 dog fields, but it did not get past the 1st reading. At the same time,Wanganui put forward that dogs could be drawn in boxes that suit the dogs, railer 1to3, wide runners 678. We just look at OZ, how about we look at UK? As we will have too many dogs here, the 1st thing we can do is to stop all OZ dogs coming in?The dogs that come in is about the same number that go to GAP? Bev

  4. So,today we are advised on The Greyhound Racing NZ Website... As from Friday 22 Dec 2017 Stewards race reports will include the reporting of any euthanised dogs. This begs the question WHO WAS THE FOOL(S) who decided that withholding this previously reported information was in any way a wise strategy!!! The Current Board & The RIU continuing to procrastinate and do nothing to bring the current accusations of live baiting to a head also needs addressing now,not later. Hiding behind the excuses of an RSPCA enquiry is doing Our Code absolutely no good at all,and denying The Coles a chance to show their innocence/or otherwise!

  5. Don't think " trainers in general " don't care about their dog. Most trainers have a great love for these wonderful animals, a few let the majority down. We rehome all our dogs, some of which can be here for up to a year after they retire from racing, you don't do that without loving them. And yes Bonnie is at the riccarton market as often as she can. 7. With all the doom & gloom going on in our industry at the moment with the investigation & the report that has come out I would like to put a little bit of sun shine back into it. I would just like to wish every one in the greyhound industry , all the members of the of Racecafe & the staff that run the site a very Merry Christmas & A safe New Year. I look forward to seeing & reading all your posts in the new year.

  8. I have never been more disgusted with my sport than I am right now. If our membership doesn't unite to force the necessary changes, then others will make changes for us. I am tired of the buts, the blindfolded wishful thinkers, the denial brigade, the finger wavers, and the dinosaurs, our own attitudes, and actions are at the crux of this issue. No one wants to stand up and speak out, and when one of our members does, he is labeled a troublemaker and bashed. You pedestal those who don't deserve it and rubbish those who do right by there dogs, no matter how average their racers are. The people who train by legal means, who don't abandon their dogs because they aren't fast enough, who hold on to their dogs until a forever home becomes available, these are the heroes of our sport, not the mega breeding dumpers who talk themselves up at the awards. This will be our one and only wake up call, FFS Wake UP!

What a crazy post ATW. My guess is that NZ imports more greyhounds per number of trainers than any other greyhound racing country in the world. If you are looking at reducing numbers and at the same time create a sustainable industry in NZ the very first logical move would be to stop imports immediately, not stop the breeding and developing a true NZ industry. It would soon separate the wheat from the chaff as you would see the real trainers come to the fore not the pseudo ones.

  10. I've had my fair share of moans on here Bobby but normally (alcohol dependant)try and get my facts straight. The first thing I notice about your gripe is the head to head, Colletts horse had 3 Len on Innes at the 500 and was being ridden up not making much ground , when Leith levelled with her at around the 200 mark the number 7 created a tightening issue, both riders stopped riding losing momentum, now this momentum was all they both had as both were only going through the motions without looking dividend bearing,so why would they try to lift their mounts again? The most obvious thing to me is in all likelihood with a clear run you were going to lose anyway and with this being the case knowing you backed the wrong horse just accept your loss . The rules have been explained and people who punt head to heads know the risks involved( you being the exception)it's an option that should of been removed after the Walker ballsup but 'they' knew better. Don't take h2h bets and you could have a merrier Xmas

  12. If anyone has been kicked in the teeth over the last few months it is the greyhound, trainers, owners, breeders and rearers. They have been subject to innuendo, supposition, slander and gossip. I have many friends within the industry who have all been painted with the one brush, while a vociferous few ruin rampant feeding on each others theories. Oh how I hate the silent majority. I also am also disgusted at our sport. Disgusted that so many honest, hard working, caring, animal lovers have been tainted. Disgusted also that much of that tainting has come from within

  13. GOM, Play the victim ?? The hounds that are euthanized are the victim, not volunteers. However, Its very difficult to feel volunteers aren't being used by trainers when either they continue breeding them or euthanize them while we work bloody hard to get each and every hound homed .... I'll correct that so as not to offend...some trainers.....none of the ones on here of course. All the trainers on here are the good ones!!, none of the bad ones are on here, they are all out there somewhere where no one can get to them........ To be fair, I know there are good trainers, probably more good ones than bad ones . I know some of them. I converse with some of them. I have had some of them help me with problem greyhounds. However the general public perception is that it is all trainers, all the industry, all greyhound racing and we all know that perception is a persons reality. You get enough with that same reality and any cause is in serious trouble. I totally understand that "you all" want to protect your industry but cmon guys it doesn't matter whether its 1800 euthanized over 4 years or 300 in one year, 50, 20, 10, 01 is still too many. Don't go looking at other breed euthanisation figures. That is just so disingenuous. The issue is greyhounds, bred to race, bred to win stakes, bred to bet on, bred to be disposed of when no longer needed. This is your issue, deal to it. Speak up and make a stand against euthanizing greyhounds . Finally, what would happen if I challenged all trainers on this forum to post that they have never euthanized a greyhound for other than medical, injury or dangerous to humans reasons ?. While at it include live baiting as well. Flagship. It is nice to be appreciated, just sorry we can't home more :(. We are working hard to find homes.

  14. With Cambridge taking the annual Christmas Eve meeting (Sunday) we see Manukau take the Thursday daytime slot. Going over the fields today I’ve found what I believe to be a dog over the odds, I refer to race 7 #5 Stay Away Haydo. I’ve made it my best bet of the day* While his box 5 stats are far from impressive I can see him giving the leaders a 3-4 lengths start before picking up win #9 from 18 at track/distance. NZ TAB $4.80 $1.70 Anyone else see something at the Manukau meeting that they like today?

  16. You are talking to dorks here, most cannot train let alone breed. They have no idea how to rear or educate. A good portion of NZ trainers are not trainers at all, they are just caretakers of ready made products from Australia. There are very few knowledgeable Trainers and Breeders in NZ. Most of whats bred in NZ is shit, incapable of running further than 300 mtrs, and the dogs they produce are weak physically resulting in lots of breakdowns. Gone are the days of astute breeders that matched their Sire to compliment their Bitches weakness, now they just line up for a bottle of semen without even a thought about whether the mating will help eliminate the weakness's in the Dam line. Now its all about factory farming and a numbers game with the bigger breeders, and as for the backyard ones, they just mate up any old thing because its their favourite dog.

Have a happy time, look after yourselves, make all your decisions based on love and drive safely as I may coming the other way. Make sure you look up the meaning of anthropomorphism and remember this; There is no such thing as not having an opinion, you either have an opinion or gift that by tacitly doubling the value of some others diehard opinion. 18. Why only some of the imports? If the breeding here is unsustainable it is only because of the imports. We had an industry before they flooded in and there is plenty of evidence it was better than we have now e.g mostly middle distance or further racing
    1 point
  19. I understand why you would wish to implement such a plan, but based on what facts? Imports pay a fee which also covers rehoming, no rehoming fee is attached to NZ breds. Do you know what the percentages are of Au and NZ dogs to rehoming? Not everyone chooses to breed, they should have an option. A cap on imports already exists, no cap exists on NZ breds, which means that individual trainers can breed to excess with no thought to the retirement or welfare of that stock that floods the industry. A breakdown of those breeders efforts should be undertaken asap. However, what I do not agree with is the inclusion of an Au kennel in NZ, a kennel set up with the sole purpose of unloading lesser quality dogs surplus to requirements in Au. That should not be happening. Maybe it would be in our best interest to reduce the import quota and cap the number of imports per kennel, but personally, I would not do away with imports completely. The numbers need to be crunched to identify the areas that contribute the greatest number to any lost dogs tally

  20. Was watching the tv one news tonight and here they were highlighting the apparent deliberate lack of transparency by greyhound nz when it comes to record keeping. I could not help but think of the post aquaman made last month about the very same subject, where he called for just that.. Interesting to go back and read those who supported his comments and those who rubbished his comments. So here we are today listening to the news where the greyhound industry is being rubbished because your leaders have failed to do what it appears the majority of your participants want, all to deceive the public. Its shake your head and throw your hands in the air stuff. It also highlights that in some of the threads Scooby has closed down, the very same subject matter is what we are seeing on prime time tv,on radio,in newspapers and on the internet.

  23. Breeding needs to be addressed. A few trainers are responsible for the bulk of breeding in NZ. Some trainers like me choose not to breed at all. A limit should be set and a tax imposed for any dog bred over that acceptable limit. This tax could be used to increase and improve rehoming outcomes for all. Those who have chosen to go big, do so for their own benefit and not for the benefit of the industry. They should be held accountable. Everyone who does breed hopes they will be rewarded with a champion or at least a dog that is competitive at the top end of racing. Most breed responsibly. Should someone be allowed to breed 300 pups a year in that quest? The simple answer is no. They knew the percentages when they embarked on that journey, a journey that now has caused the sport to fall into disrepute. 300 pups from one trainer is more than the total rehomed by GAP last year.

Not sure what the wow moment is there. Nope I haven't invited any.. Why not? As stated earlier I don't know who they are and how to find them. I did think your point was that most trainers cared so much they would come forward anyway. How would they be aware of these events? They would go to the gap website and look at all the events listed, or ask to join their local gap Facebook group, or contact the local regional coordinator who are listed on the gap website or send an email to the national coordinator or even contact GRNZ .... If they really really wanted to they could find a way of getting involved, they could. I don't see how paranoia comes into it, it's not paranoid to state facts about trainer partipation in gap events. Finally as none are currently attending I can't see how what I thought of them would make any difference......and by the way all are welcome, trainers, public, greyhound owners etc. cause it's about homing greyhounds, not what we may think of each other. getting back to my trainers don't give a shit comment. I'm glad it evoked a response,it was meant to because the public don't see xxx amount of trainers being good and xxx amount being bad. They see all trainers as one collective group responsible for xxxx amount of greyhounds being killed. I'm not saying that's right but that's the reality. The challenge is how you change the public perception and that's going to be very hard to do.
    1 point
  27. You sound like a like minded animal lover. Well done. I really think it should be an initiative handled by GRNZ. Initially I thought it could be mainly funded by reduction of the petrol vouchers. Then of course they disappeared anyway. It should be run kind of like an ACC fund there could be a levy on.fees 5% of all stakes could go into the fund. It would probably need an injection to start with. Maybe the clubs with available funds could help start it off. I hear the Chch club has the guts of aI cool mil in the coffers surely they could spare 50k to start off such a scheme. It would be a positive move. The public can't comprehend why so many dogs are euthanised with fixable injuries and quite frankly Neither can I.

The length of time & lack of transparency when investigating issues such as positives, and the perception of protection afforded to certain participants for mine.... There's always more that can be done to address wastage, but there are some fantastic rehoming groups and individuals doing a great job with finished horses so there are plenty of good examples out there. HRNZ and the breeders are getting beind events and starting to promote the life after racing message which is also positive. Of course not all horses (or dogs) are suitable for rehoming which is a hard pill to swallow for certain welfare groups.

  31. Wow. Your comment was that trainers generally don't give a shit. Have you actually invited any trainer to attend an event?. Are they even aware there are events? I have never been invited to a GAP event, the only way I would know they were happening would be via an area FB page. I actually don't know who you are, but I read your previous posts which gave a clue to what area you were from. Talk about paranoia. Would anyone want to attend a GAP event when they were thought of so poorly, I wouldn't?

Clean Up Your Act says Winnie

I'll answer these one at a time (after my attempt at humour obviously failed). - Nope, Taranaki is not a large area. About one hour to anywhere from anywhere. We recently attended the Stratford A&P show, smack damn in the middle of Taranaki. Probably 30 minutes drive maximum for 100,000 people. - one trainer or 10 trainers none have made contact and attended in 5 or 6 years. Zero is zero. - Virtually all events are on weekends and virtually all volunteers work fulltime and they make it, so again nope. Many of them over and over again. So over 5 to 6 years you would think maybe one trainer would volunteer to join a GAP roster at a Taranaki event. - Not sure what you mean by not knowing the subject matter and therefore being inflammatory . I have been involved in every GAP event in Taranaki in the last 5 to 6 years and can quite genuinely say no Taranaki trainer has volunteered to join in on a GAP event in Taranaki during that time. So inflammatory no, factual correct. I say this will full openness and it being my current knowledge and understanding. If I am incorrect, and I sincerely believe I am not, then please feel free to correct me. Having said that if one has, than even one is not a good number over that many years but I know the other volunteers well so would be mighty surprised. - not misleading. The issue is about trainers attending GAP events in Taranaki and I sincerely believe none have in Taranaki. Nothing in my comments is about trainers not supporting people who have adopted their hounds directly or through other rehoming agencies. If that's what you have done, awesome. and if I have self outed myself by answering these questions in the way I have so be it (which was probably the intent of E.) then so be it.

  34. I am sure this would have worked fine. Robert Dunn Harness Racing Stables, headed by Robert Dunn and his son John Dunn, has been the subject of a Racing Integrity Unit investigation which has dragged on for seven months. Four horses in the care of the of the stable returned positive swabs containing caffeine which were taken at the Nelson Winter Cup two-day meeting on June 9 and 11. The Dunns have claimed that the horses were nobbled – the caffeine was administered by an outside party. The claim has caused rifts within the Canterbury harness racing community, with those accused of the nobbling threatening their own legal action. Racing Integrity Unit general manager Mike Godber told The Star yesterday the investigation had been completed. But the decision on whether to charge the Dunns has been delayed for two weeks after Robert Dunn requested more time for a private investigator he has enlisted to complete his own inquiries. I am feeling like Dexter the Bobblehead re the rest of it.

  37. That may be the case, but that is not where I was going. What the other two codes do as far as welfare and statistics has nothing to do with our situation and should not ever be used as a comparison, excuse, or justification for our own behaviour. The same applies to comparing euthanasia statistics of other organisations. It's not relevant. What is relevant is our statistics and how to correct the balance.

  38. I also rehome dogs, as do many other trainers. Spend hours helping adoptee parents with health, feeding, and behavioural issues, lots of them GAP adoptees. And yes, I have attended GAP events, as have others, but availability is dictated by physical location. One local trainer has 5 GAP fails sitting on her sofas. While I agree that there will always be a small group who could do better, trainers, in general, do give a shit even though they may not always agree with the nuts and bolts of racing. I do understand that many re-homing volunteers are very disappointed and frustrated by the news reports, as we all should be. Most, however, don't place the blame on all. Yes, the situation needs to be fixed, and hopefully with a consensus that will happen quickly.

Why do we bother spending hour after hour of our own time trying to find them homes when "trainers" in general don't give a shit about them. You have had your chances, now you will have things forced on you. Also trying to blur things by talking about other dogs. Shame on you, that is disgusting. 44. Jimbob, my guess is that the RIU will stop head to head betting in the near future as it can’t successfully be policed, primarily on the basis of animal welfare. If they don’t, they are not doing their job properly. Animal welfare going forward is one of our industries biggest hurdles, even though I think Thoroughbred Racing is the best by far. Greyhound Racing has a dreadful outlook and where do all the very slow cheaply bred Standardbreds, unsuitable for much, end up?
