    Sheree Tomlinson

Tremendous drive by Sheree to win win the Dominion. As well as being the first female to win the race she must surely be the youngest driver to win & I imagine on the biggest long shot to win in the history of the race. This is a great story and the powers that be at HRNZ should make every effort to get this story on main stream media. This human interest story is exactly the type of media attention Harness Racing so desperately needs. Well done to the Ken Ford and the whole family. Great to see people without huge resources winning big races.

  4. Heartiest congratulations to our friends and rivals the Hurricanes - TC, John, Hesi, Porky, Cubes. Absolutely worthy champions ....again ! Brilliant. Thanks to my Mighty Blues Brothers Pete, Gordy, Brian and Geoff. You guys have been great, and very well led by debut captain Pete. Top effort Blues to come from 8th and last qualifying spot, to finish the closest of seconds. It wasn't our greatest day of tipping today, but when Kidmenever had it's nose in front a stride from the post in the penultimate race we had the winning of the match. Coulda, woulda, shoulda ....ultimately we came up short. But what fun it has all been. Biggest thanks of all to PJ ...thanks for your wonderful comps and all the pleasure they have given to all of us. You're truly a legend, PJ.

  5. Fair to say the Canes were pretty pleased to see Invincibella four wide the whole way. Thanks to the Blues for a great match - went right down to the wire and I truly thought you had us heading into the last race. Always a pleasure to play against you guys - you add a lot of colour to these comps. Thanks to my Canes team-mates. Cubes thanks for stepping up part way through the season - much appreciated. Porky, great addition to our team and clearly the winner of the "rookie-of-the-season" award. Hesi and John - both unbeaten in the three knockout rounds - brilliant. John, that's three Super Comps in a row now - maybe time to retire!? Peter - thanks again and see you for the Summer-Autumn comp

Our form was pretty ordinary through the comp, but we finished on an absolute high. Thank you, Turbos, and a big thank you to the organizer PJ, brilliantly done sir.

Was just reading this post when i realised race was about to start. Berri in reality this race often lacks depth with generally only 3 or 4 genuine class fillies. On that score this no worse than many other editions. Dijon Bleu clearly the benchmark filly thus far, Hasaholo a very good 2YO last year. Prom Queen has great winning record but hard to guage the class of fields she has beaten. Most of the rest of the field have shown enough to be a chance for a place. The true depth of the field wont be known for another 6 months i would think.
    2 points
  18. Bit tough on Prom Queen Berri. She has won eight of nine but ' ..... lord help us if that's is the best we can come up with'? What more could she have done other than win the other start? She could well be a champion in the making. And as for shifting it north which Northern fillies can you identify who would strengthen the field and if there are any why have their trainers not come south? I think you will find that the dreadful spring weather is the reason for the lighter than usual field quality and numbers wise and indeed that and the road issues are the reason for the lack of Northerners at the cup meeting this year. What it does do is give the Southerners a crack at some good stakes and hey why not? I think the racing has been of reasonable standard, bar the 2000 Guineas rough house carry on , and at the end of the day the South deserves it's day in the sun.

    Safety

Again on Saturday, a man was put at great risk when the starter let the field go with a man in front of the gates. This s the 2nd time this has happened at Riccarton and after the first time I was of the belief that the starter had to be positioned in front of the gates, so he had a view of any person that was still in front before releasing the button.Every time a meeting is abandoned the RIU state it was done for rider and horse safety, well if that is the case, why hasn't the recommendation/rule being followed, does the RIU going to wait until someone is killed or badly hurt? Another recommendation i believe must be implemented is for the Clerk of the Course to be positioned in front of the stalls , the benefit would be if a horse breaks through, he/she is the right position to recapture a horse, they are no hope standing behind the barrier, just my thoughts.

  20. Being older, I really enjoy the substantive basis of Brian de Lore’s articles in the Informant. I came through a communication era of challenged information, outside of conformity Brian delivers a subjective questionnaire of the figurative leaders of our state. He needs to be applauded, for he provides question marks where previously full stops prevailed. The nature of the revelations of his articles question whether the management of the RIB are “fit for purpose”. You can answer the questions individually because you are impacted by that question. I would say the balance sheet says NO. Let me put it this way, in 1996 exports for NZ wine were $60m, thoroughbreds were the same. Yes a lifetime to some, nowadays, they are looking at 1 $billion in 2018. We are lagging behind by furlongs. We were exporting product in 1996 at $90m, this coming year maybe $106m. I know bottles can increase in production terms, horses don’t at the same rate, but the incentives and trade input has not been the same. What does this reflect............cannabilisation. NZRB seems to think the same can prevail now. J Allen thinks he can grow the business from a small base, against international competition from all corners, then he is a legend in his own bathroom. The industry needs a return to investors, be it by returns on investment or a relief for investment, then some assurance can be gained for doing so. The plonkers in The RIB have a) no risk b)no understanding of betting and most of all c) no comprehension of how the industry in NZ works. When you you get people with or without experience governing the show, then you will have an example like Fletchers on the share market, difference being you can sell your shares. Not us...........we just have to suck it up...........that’s why we have no say part form B de Lore. Sad state of affairs....................

    Fail To Score Up.

Race 6 yesterday at Addington Alta Orlando wouldn't budge when asked to score up behind the mobile and was not scratched. At the gallops if a horse fails to enter the starting stalls it is late scratched which is fair to the punter. I can understand if a horse breaks in the score up it is still deemed a starter as it seems the actual race starts before the starting point is reached. However to not even start to score up is surely a non starter and should be late scratched to be fair to the punter. Am I wrong?

When I first got into racing many years ago my late uncle gve me great advice to always back South Island horses at Trentham during their Cup Carnival. His reasons were that South Island horses have good hard racing over NZ Cup Week and through the Christmas New Year which prepares them well for the big Trentham track. My uncle was not a biased South Islander, he was from Hastings Take the last two seasons, The winner of The telegraph paying $40 plus and the previous year a $110 winner. There are not a lot of South Island horses that travel north to the carnival and they tend to be outsiders so when they win, the dividend is well over the odds..

To be fair on this topic Berri looking at the list of 1000 Guineas winners in yesterday's racebook there have not been a terrible lot to set the world alight in the last 17 years. Seachange, Kings Rose and The Jewel are really the only ones to make a mark in Aussie, Risqué to a lesser extent. There are a lot of very nice fillies listed and don't want to insult anyone's horse but there aren't too many world beaters. Katie Lee and Daffodil certainly made an NZ impression but who is to say Hasahalo will not go on?

Watched it before, went reasonably hard to get to the lead, then had a quiet time and then had a fair few visitors outside it's wheel a reasonable distance from home. Bit tough for a first starter but was 3/3 in the betting so can't see much to complain about. Brodie is right.

Oh my god, these people don't want discussion or accountability. The industry is struggling and people like Brodie have their heads stuck up where the sun don't shine. God , give me strength!!!!!!

    Sheree Tomlinson

Yes, a good drive by Sheree Tomlinson. The story must be sold to mainstream media. Ms Tomlinson has worked hard to improve her driving skills with frequent trips to Southland and Forbury and her hard work and commitment is paying off. She seems a very personable young woman and just the sort of ambassador the sport needs. One thing I was pleased about over the carnival was the emergence of young talent both human and equine. Young trainers like Mitchell Kerr and Tom Bagrie tasted success while young drivers like Samantha Ottley, Tomlinson and Matt Anderson saluted the judge. Young horses like Chase Auckland, The Fixer, The Dorchester and Ultimate Machete are stars of the future.

  39. R1 : 1 - Al Hasa Nice first-up effort, and will improve enough to win this. 5- Miroslava Trainer says is a better chance than Thunder Bay. Mind you, last week he said Kinagat would beat Enzo's Lad, and we know how that ended. R2 : BEST BET NEW ZEALAND 1 - Prom Queen Has left everything in her wake to date. Hardest test today, but will pull her army of supporters through. 2 - Dijon Bleu Is going from strength to strength. Will run the quinella, absolutely. R3 : 1 - Kawi Is still the one. Wouldn't want to be on anything else, even at the short odds. 7 - Miss Wilson Will lead them a merry dance, and quinella prospects look very, very strong. R4 : 5 - Bee Tee Junior Comes into this very nicely off an immaculate build-up. Will be too big, too strong. Mighty Blues to be partying hard into the night. 9 - Gobstopper Goes into the big race somewhat underrated. Will be strong out front, and only Bee Tee Junior will get to him. ...late. Top quinella. R5 : 1 - Lucky Hussler When he's good he's very good (cue 3L win two starts back) ; when he's bad he's ................well, you know the rest. Make it a good one today. 8 - Land of Plenty Was running on purposefully last start, and extra distance will suit nicely. R6 : 2 - Montoya Star In a purple patch of form this campaign. Can't see anything matching this one's motor today. 11- Glory Days There have been plenty of glory days for this nice type, and plenty more to come. Happy to be on. R7 : 2 - Big Duke Far too good for Almandin in the Melbourne Cup (being better ridden helped). Will have Almandin's measure again today. 3 - Assign 3rd-stringer of the Hickmott runners, but could well finish in front of the other two. I'm on board. R8 : 1 - Snitzepeg Very nice type with solid form on the board. Ran home nicely last outing, and looks a good thing today. 10 - Peaceful State Looks a progressive type that will acquit himself very well in only his third career run. The one to threaten the favourites. R9 : BEST BET AUSTRALIA 6 - Raw Impulse Has built nicely to this, and with any sort of luck in the running will take this out. Expecting a top run. 10 - Payroll Seen to be running on very nicely last two starts, when well-supported both times. Ready to strike. R10 : 6 - Sebring Dream Plenty to like about the performances this campaign. Should get a sweet trip, and be too strong in the closing stages at nice odds. 12- Red is the Rose And Blue is the Champion - 5 Mighty Blues that is. Bring it home Red is the Rose, to seal the deal.

Yeah well should the southerners be put at a disadvantage if they want to contest the race by travelling north and shagging their season? You only need to look how form dips after Southern horses go to the Wellington Cup. Travel is an unfortunate fact of life and bear in mind the Northerners can get flights south whereas there is no regular flight north. I don't think the fields are too bad this carnival - some of the supporting races have been excellent betting fields I know I am biased but I am tipping Pitty to have a huge day today.

    Racing

What a stupid thread. The more races a dog has proves one thing, it is sound, and should be allowed to race as long as it stays in that condition regardless of starts. They are race dogs after all, and as long as they are competitive, age nor starts should stop them. I like to see older dogs with many starts under their belt still doing what they love doing. It all comes down to trainer management and placement.

  48. The thing is, YDGAS. You repeatedly post about how the tipsters are rubbish. A wee while back you started a thread tracking their performance which was great but you stopped as soon as one of them started showing a profit. You seem to think that TV tipsters should have this magical strike rate, but there's no reason why they should. If you're winning money hand over fist from the horses, why would you also want to work long hours on a barely watched TV channel telling some dim-witted viewers all the answers? If they're such bad tipsters then take note of their picks and back something else. It's not rocket science. Oh, and I'm about as removed from the subject as can be, so don't even try using that pathetic way out. Look forward to your picks on Saturday!
