The thing is 2Admin, these people (including my niece) have had the good fortune to go into a syndicate for a modest sum and have ended up with a Rosehill Guineas and NZ Derby winner. Many of them, at significant cost to themselves, have booked and gone to Melb to watch their beloved Gingernuts run in a Spring Carnival G1 race. They are there, in the Stands, excited beyond anticipation and the unthinkable happens - the horse breaks down in front of 80,000+ people. Before it's even got to race ! Can you imagine their disappointment and more importantly, their concern for their Gingernuts? Then you add the cream to their sadness by going on social media and quote " It won't win another race". You're very insensitive and even if your prophecy turns out to be true, it was untimely and need not have been said. Period.

  3. A big bow to our harness friends. You guys rocked and really put up some great performances. As a first time captain, hats off to my team the Blues. We went to some dark places in the qualifying rounds but class came out and here we are in the final after only qualifying in 8th by a very slim margin. Special mention to Howie who has kept his head up and been brilliant despite some unbelievable losses earlier on. Take a break boys, job well done and I'll see you at training on Wednesday morning.

TA - or maybe more so David Ellis - tends to polarise people a bit. Some on here regularly take opportunities to put the boot in as you say - but some are also nauseatingly sycophantic. My opinion of either the entity or the individual is pretty irrelevant and it probably relfects my own situation that I find more magic in stories of the person whose modest home-bred or $5,000 yearling purchase becomes a champion - than the man who can out-bid practically everyone except the sheiks. But this is about the horse and I'm really disappointed for the people who are connected. I felt sad for man & beast yesterday. But I also acknowledge that team had had some real highs already with Gingernuts and it goes to show you should enjoy those highs as this racing game can be a rollercoaster. Most of us in the game have known the sadness of these disappointments - although for most of us they are less public & less dramatic. But no less impactful in their own way. Whether it be the loss of a foal after 11mo gestation, a promisng 3y/o breaking down before even making the races - or whatever. At least with the stakes the horse has won there is plenty there to pay for the best treatment money can buy. Hopefully we'll see him back but if he turns out not to be a racing proposition I wonder if any of the ppl involved will elect to treat & rehab him regardless?

Exactly and is why you should never say never......anyone remember this little mare???? Miss Potential was a champion mare who raced in New Zealand & Australia in the early 2000s. Her comeback from a spiral fracture of her near-side cannon bone, resulting in 15 weeks strung up to the ceiling of her box, and subsequent race day performances endeared her to the public.[1]Her biggest victories came in the Group 1 Mudgway Stakes (1340m) at Wanganui in August, 2003, the Group 1 VRC Nestle Classic (1600m) in Melbourne on Derby Day 2004, and in the Group 1 Stoney Bridge Stakes (1600m) at Hastings in September 2005.[2]

Just a total embarassment ....too many conflicts of interest...but its a small gene puddle, so no one involved is too far outside the 2 degrees of separation...and its sooo boring! I will say Steve Davis shows a bit of life...talks a lot but if you don't take him too seriously, (I don't think he takes himself too seriously either) he's passable....

Was indeed a perfect ride. Age of Fire went a huge race too. Relaxed well and boomed home. By the way, Brian Court's horse raced like a drunk most of the way and ran wide on the turn, forcing several very wide. Horse finished 50 lengths off them over a mile. Was clearly never a chance and just got in the way of those who did have a chance. About time for the club to be stricter about which horses may run in the G1s?

I tend to agree with your comments regarding far reaching tentacles and they aren't the only ones. The sad part is that the people at the coal face of this industry don't appear to have any tentacles at all and i refer to trainers and jockey. I write this from my recovery bed under the influence of tramadol and other assorted drugs ,so i might be wrong. Now back to watching replay o fCoro st.

Ha ha P4P - I knew you would resist the characterisation I bestowed on you as a result of that post - and you didn't disappoint! Funnily enough it's also been said of me more than once that I do not suffer fools gladly. However while I am not "glad" I try not to be vicious and abusive .... And I know all about leopards and spots .... so I knew all too well that the pitbull had only gone into his kennel to nap briefly ... PS: ah yes Darwin .... it is too scary if you consider what is happening demographically in this country ... but that's another whole topic right there ... child poverty? Children aren't supposed to have their wealth measured!!! - but they are supposed to have loving parents who support then financially, emotionally and educationally ... how come so many don't? Could it be something to do with a welfare system which pays people more and more money to have more and more babies - even if they never had the will or ability to raise even one in a responsible way? I told you - DO NOT GET ME STARTED!!! I'm way off topic .....

I don't know about it being a good ride. Certainly a winning ride. Did they not say he got a 10 day suspension for interference. The head on just after the start showed some awful interference which could easily have had serious consequences. The leith innes horse had any real chance extinguished when it took such a bad bump. A very rough race with some poor riding. Its all there on the video to see.

Correct - Bernard Saundry (BS) and John Allen certanly wouldn't know. The cringe worthy Rodders and Sweens say nothing when one of their riders puts in a shocker. It's so obvious after the fact, again those above are clueless. Surely this is a conflict of interest that needs to go like Hong Kong, on air presenters cannot be jockey managers. NZRB and NZTR just don't see the obvious. What a way to grow a business.

    Contrasting numbers

Today's Sunday Star Times, with a number of John Allen quotes, states that the NZRB will have a $24 million funding injection over two years following its launch of its automated fixed-odds betting platform which is "on track" for launch in August next year. Brian de Lore from the Informant this week says that the new platform "has cost $30 million to build , will incur a further $17 million annually in running costs and presumably an ongoing commission to Paddy Power." So there will be a $12 million annual benefit after incurring an annual costs of $17 milliion, and round that out to say $30 million with the Paddy Power commission. Brian de Lore states that the NZRB achieve a 2% net return on sports betting and a 15% return on horses. Brian de Lore's article says " Having to get extra profit just to cover the $17 million running costs and then the objectives to recruit sports bettors to be converted to racing seems to be akin to a plot you would find in a Jules Verne novel." John Allen in the Sunday Star Times article says that the new strategy includes " more online and social media advertising to engage more youth in the sport." The river is wide.

Thanks to Michael Dee the horse has a good chance. Dee pulled the horse up within a few strides after the horse faltered. The vet had the leg splinted within minutes. On racing.com they said one of the owners collapsed but didn't need to be taken to hospital. Must have been incredibly stressful.

  34. I probably agree there is a NH bias against SH horses, but in reality, if you are a genuine, thoroughbred fanatic, have a deep respect for history and you are lucky enough to own a horse of international calibre, why wouldn't you want to take on the best at Royal Ascot, Longchamps or Champions Day? Winx has now won a truckload of cash, 3 Cox Plates, so whats the next challenge if you decide to keep her in work? She appears to be a relaxed, push-button type of horse that would settle in beautifully at Newmarket, so what's stopping them? Sorry folks, I'm slowly losing my enthusiasm for this camp....they don't appear to have a genuine appetite to travel this mare? So challenge yourself Mr Waller, then take a deep breath and take the plunge...albeit probably 12months too late......the world is waiting to see the incredible Aussie champ...and you, most likely, will never have the amazingly good fortune to train such a wonderful thoroughbred like Winx again...no regrets!

Rather off beat comment to make. At this time who cares about that ? , that is for another day . Surely the most important thing is the horse's welfare and that hopefully he has many days ahead of him . Good news of that front exceeds anything else.

    Hats Off To Opie

Obviously we have different takes. While I never personally said OPB caused the interference,i thought they said on trackside he had a 10 day suspension,so I assume you don't get that because of good riding. Whatever, I stick to my claim that there was some poor riding. As far as The Bostonian goes I think it is you who are talking nonsense. It does not appear on over big horse, the exact type that do not handle being knocked about, and it had illustrated at its previous run that it does not cop interference very well. Whether the interference was the cause of its poor run we will never know, but i believe it fair to think it was a factor.

  39. Harewood, what are you waffling on about? The Raphoe that I'm familiar with has: done the majority of his racing at Forbury, in relatively weak fields been with the same trainer for years - for at least it's last 40 starts been driven by top class drivers, including B Orange throughtout his career invariably puts in runs that suggest "back me next start" needs every possible favour to win a race - which he got on Thursday Punting doesn't interest me. The odd $10 interest bet over a beer at the local is more my style. Good on you for backing a winner. Hopefully you don't have to wait another 2 1/2 years for Raphoe to win again!

You may be right my friend - except for the last paragraph! So, to show I don't "always" agree with every post you make let me give my 2 cents worth and a HO (humble observation). The field consists of: Happy Clapper (winner of 2017 Epsom, Tramway, plus 2nd in George Main to Winx). It's Somewhat, winner of 2017 Doncaster and Hollindale: Gailo Chop, winner 2017 Caulfield Stakes (beat Bonneval) and also this race last year: Tosen Stardom, winner 2017 Toorak Hcp: Sense of Occasion, winner 2017 Doomben Cup: Tom Melbourne, 2nd in 2017 Epsom and just about everything he's run in: Folkswood, winner Cranbourne Cup and 3rd Cox Plate: Ginger Nuts, 2017 Rosehill Guineas and NZ Windsor Park: Taj Mahal, 2nd Arlington Secretariat: The rest of the field are led by Cliff Edge, a very handy 3yo who will lead them up I'm sure. So really, it's a fairly good field, in which Kawi would struggle.

This thread has descended into a comparison between HB and MD and a suggestion that some are trying to put down Bowman as a rider. That's an incorrect conclusion. Bowman is a fantastic rider but like "every" rider does, he's having a tough trot - if you take Winx out of the equation. All the best have their bad runs and Bowman's own comment may provide the answer. He said he's been riding very cautiously because he feared being suspended and losing the ride on Winx and missing out on the lucrative Spring carnival. I'd have to say that he slaughted Marmelo and Corey Brown rode the perfect race on Rekindling to win the Cup. It was a pearler from Brown.
