  1. Is it just me that's pissed off every year by the so called NZ experts waffle aimlessly about Melbourne cup fields when the real experts i.e Channel 7 are providing an amazing coverage of all the races. Its just plain nonsense to cross over to them with a few minutes to racetime when they could use at least one channel to let Channel 7 do the whole preview. A bonus would be not having to listen to Rodley Sweeny etc waffle on about things they know very little about.

I have been quite critical of many things racing of late because I have been utterly frustrated at the inability of leadership and direction on many matters in many layers of our racing business. I went to the races at Elerslie yesterday. Hadn't been since Easter where I took a few people along to watch Snapshot go for a burn. So here is arguably the best day on the racing calendar to seduce new people to racing. So all and sundry were invited. We bought some members send tickets ($50 a head) and found a table up top. Then ordered drinks...a bottle of champagne (Mumm at $115) because Deutz at $85 didn't fit the bill. No other choices...why not? Couldn't pay with eftpos or credit...only cash!! Couldn't take the bottle away to pop the top (that's what you do). Had trouble hearing the races until I asked someone to change the levels and the small screen in front of the stands wasn't big enough for my fading eyes. Went to go and get something to eat. All the normal un-attractive pies, sausage rolls, packaged sandwiches, and the odd sweet. Noticed that you could order chips so did so because everything else didn't appeal. There was of course the standard ham and sloppy coleslaw on a bun. Chips were delivered to the table...not crispy and underdone. Sent them back.... So I decided to look around. Plastic chairs everywhere that looked as though I was in a food hall in a shopping mall....even in the so called presidents room Went down stairs to look at the horses, went to the tie up stalls and thought to myself, why does this look like this when we should be marketing this as getting close to the horses is the most important aspect of the horse side of things. Place is dark, gloomy and stinks of horse shit from the last century. No energy in the building. Went through to the birdcage and because I'd forgotten to place a bet, decided to use my phone....couldn't get onto the TAB site. No wonder I thought........

I've mentioned in another thread but this beggars belief. With all the criticism in the past and the promises to get things right it is an absolute disgrace that the website was down for an hour before the race. Heads must roll

Take Winx out (anyone could win on her) and Bowman's record is not that flash the last few months. Has he ridden a winner in Melbourne apart from Winx? Not many I'd say at a guess. Michael Walker has ridden more winners this Melb carnival so far. Bowman's ride on Marmelo was a shocker. He must have asked Frankie how to ride the race!

They need to go to Singapore to see how well it is done. You can get into a stand right by winning post glassed in ,where you just but your hand up and a lovely waitress comes and you can order drinks, great food and she evens puts bets on as well .What a fabulous experience that was. even had photo taken with L LAXON and drinks in presidents room when his horse won .

  7. Completely agree...there was one point yesterday where Channel 7 were doing their spiel with Francesca Cumani and co (highly informative and interesting even for non punters) and they cut back to the English bird in the studio and all she did was read out the tote prices.... The Channel 7 coverage as well as the actual on track product out of Aussie just shows how far behind we are. Insurmountable I would say

I note that Ellerslie are selling sections in Peach Parade, alongside the steeplechase course. Those sections are handy to the Green Lane railway station. They would be ideal for high rise development. My concern is the shading effect any such development would have on the back straight of the course. Auckland's changeable weather means that the track needs as much sunshine as it can get. I hope there will be caveats in those sales that will mean that the track will still get as much sunshine as the fickle Auckland weather allows.

    TAB - Disgrace

It is appalling. It has problems every year on the biggest turnover day of the year. Would any other business in the world jeopardise turnover on their known biggest day? It has also had problems on feature days this spring. And crashed at Hakes Bay meeting last spring.

    Trackside Ozzie Coverage

I think the Cup week coverage plus the whole Spring Carnival event built by the industry and government shows the gulf between Australian and New Zealand. It's such a shame that the legacy built here generations ago by astute, top notch horsemen, has drifted so far into oblivion that it will never recover. I do understand the world has changed but NZ did not keep up - the same old familiar, head in the sand, we know best attitude has left the NZ industry (to be fair, it's just not racing, it's attitude across the broad spectrum of NZ society) in a state of extreme vulnerability, and some here think that one man can fix all of this....it's the culture that needs the boot...

  13. As i put in an earlier post Brodie it is exactly the same in Aus when betting into NZ harness. The difference is that you can see the Aussie odds on line as well but in Aus you cannot see the NZ fixed odds. You are at a definite advantage betting into Aus trots. Both are scared of putting up earlier odds in each others country because as I said earlier they do not have their own market settlers and rely purely on the other country setting the odds and then copying at slightly reduced odds. They do not want to be held liable to any odds that are put up overs early as they have no knowledge of the market. The closer they are to starting time the more likely they will get the odds correct. Unfortunately for both countries any overs are well gone.

  14. Winning formula will be as the MC Cup comp but if no-one guesses correctly the closest to the correct order will be declared the winner.. Picking the winner will be the first priority, if no one can do that then whoever picks the 2nd place horse, if more than one do either then where there other selections finish will decide the winner. Cheers.

  15. Hence, why Brodie will not give any tips or even an indication of what he backs. Loose lips sink ships...or odds in this case He is at war remember

  16. But do you have these skills Mr Ed cos Brodie says he has " Personally would put my intellect, life skills and business success up against yours anytime! " This is even better " There is an obvious reason that I am unable to phone or email the TAB for answers and not prepared to disclose why on here! " Lets open a discussion on the last part, anyone care to take a guess why. Could it be that he does not own a phone, tablet or PC Lets all have a guess

How does Kate Gourdie become a Board member at Auckland RC. She only became a member of the ARC this year? And She is Manager, Media and Communication for the NZRB. Surely that is a conflict of interests?

    TAB - Disgrace

Now that is utter crap. Do you work for the TAB JOT? For heavens sake, it is now 2017. Do you think that the Woolworth's online customers would forgive Woolworths if our programs locked them out of their online ordering from 1.2m skews? The mere fact that the most precious time in punting is the last 30min, and the TAB ONCE AGAIN collapses, is inexcusable. The real issue with the tote has been the line speed. It's always been the achilles heal. Everyone in punting service provision knows that the ultimate solution is the coordinated arbitrage capability of systems between totes, fixed odds, spreads, exchanges and long odds systems. That we haven't got the first one right after all this time is quite remarkable.

    TAB - Disgrace

By deleting the login then clearly the TAB were wanting to stop constant login clicking which could generate a complete crash. Those already logged in could bet. Seems a form of strategy to allow a certain operating level rather than have none at all. What gets me is over recent years theres been a whole lot of media releases how great the new contract suppliers are using this distributed cloud system. I suspect the constant change in what is supposed to be fixed odds also wouldn't help . Why call them fixed odds if they jump around more than tote odds???

It is not part of the Licencing Laws. It is part of the Licensing Laws. And if you think I am being pedantic just try dealing with one of those Fascistic people who administer the licensing law. They are a breed apart. Two years ago I was in a remote village on the slopes of Mount Grammos, just five kilometres from the Albanian border. In that village, one third the size of Karamea, there were three places selling alcoholic or spirituous beverages. None of the wine bottles (all plastic) had any labels. They sold what they made. There were no alcohol responsibility signs all over the place, even though my knowledge of the Cyrillic alphabet is limited. For all that, the only sign of drunkenness was a visitor from Tauhei. Our country has gone apeshit over liquor licensing.

Yep, Cup day Col. One at bottom of stairs going up to Members stand screened us, then one at the door not 8 steps up, then another at bottom of internal stairs. Plus several hanging around in bars and actually occupying seats. Most of them puny individuals so no physical intimidation but their mere presence bloody disrespectful.

It's ironic that back in the 70's and 80's when "entertainment " options on a Saturday were so much more limited we were almost spoilt with options on course and the quality of the eating and drinking facilities at Ellerslie anyway were amazing by todays standards. Percolated coffee , sandwiches, cakes, comfortable seating, good bars as well even though people could bring their own. This type of post has been made before and nobody listens or acts on it............. so people are voting with their feet. I used to go every meeting with friends but have not been for 8 years and that was when I hosted a corporate type event on Derby day.
