    Te Aroha today

How good was it to see our equine friends being able to show their athletic prowess on a decent track today! Well done Te Aroha, one of my favourite tracks for ambience, hospitality and fair racing when the conditions are right.

It's interesting. I've a mate who is a "leading Vet" and looks after a lot of top stables. I mentioned the "Kiwi" thing and he said that it's all bullshit. The Vets (he said) have to make a call and advise the appropriate authority (race club, stewards etc) whether or not a horse is fit to race. One of the things he mentioned to me is "the safety of the field". If they let a horse run that shows the slightest sign of lameness, they have to scratch. If they let it run, it breaks down mid-race and brings down a few, resulting in the death/serious injury to a jockey and afterwards it's revealed that it was lame and known/judged to be so by the Vets, then the lawsuits would be supersonic. OSH and co are kings and even more so today.

  4. An interesting interview from Micheal Walker this morning on Perth TAB racing radio in a segment "Everybody has a story" Speaks candidly about his near death accident and how he survived to ride again. Very courageous young man. Deserves all the success that comes his way.

    Te Aroha today

Great days racing at Te Aroha yesterday. I hadn't been on course for over 40 years! Track was in great nick considering the amount of racing on Heavy 11 tracks during the winter. Friendly relaxed atmosphere. Big thumbs up to the Te Aroha Club! The two horses I have shares in ran down the track but hey I had a great day anyway!

  7. Earth to Brodie --- 8 starters in the Flying Stakes isn't exactly unique. 1994 and 1999, to name just two recent-ish examples, had exactly the same number. And the 1993 event didn't happen at all. Were the Purdons to blame for those cases as well?

Congratulations to Brandon on riding his first New Zealand winner today in Race2 at Te Aroha on Aongatete Express. Well received by the on course crowd!

    Micheal WALKER interview

He seems to have "grown up", recognised he is "highly talented" and is building bridges with some good trainers. If he's rid himself of a few hangers-on, he will get the opportunities. Always been one of my fave jockeys - and he is a distant cuz, so good for him. If he's fit, he's on and he won't cop any crap from other jocks during a race. His ride to win the guineas was a gem and even at 100/1 I had him to run as place in my F4! Didn't get it though, didn't have him to win the bloody race!

Again, this issue highlights the huge cavern between Kiwi & Oz racing. Apart from the animal welfare issue (which is huge & rightly so), the stewards have the rights of the punter (you know, the people that actually stump up the money for racing) to protect. The punter is king and everything needs to be open and transparent. Regardless of the Chief Steward's reputation, this proposed inspection is certainly needed and welcomed as there is too much invested on the Doubles/prepost betting.

  14. Also in the Sth Island there is Highly Recommended, Raise The Flag, Gallant Guru, Coats Choice, Verdi, Ghibellines and Remind all standing for $5k or less and Sth Island is not the end of the world.

  15. After some deliberation from team Captain, Flying Sulkys will not play their last Joker this week. I regard the Blues rather unlucky to be in 9th and rather dangerous this week. Past performances have convinced me to attack the Barbarians in the last week and expose some weaknesses . In early for that PJ. Cheers Mate

I had an early (couple of months before the race) speculative fixed odds futures bet on Charles Road in the Livamol. He didn't perform well leading up to the race and wasn't in the final field, however my fixed odds future bet was refunded. This suggests all bets were voided.

  18. Certainly no denying the obvious Brodie and F U but regarding punting on the Allstars, you ask "Do punters really get excited backing Lazarus or Heavens Rocks at $2 to win?" They obviously do when they win but if they don't it takes a bit of time to re-coup the loss as it appears most of these " big punters" seem to go for the small odds, which says to me they're not very brave at all. Something I've notices and if you're following the Allstars they too can come up with some handy dividends. Last week the TAB told us pre-start someone had pot $2K on Mr Hippie @ $2 and the same at $2.20, however no mention of anyone putting that kind of money on Bettor Trix at sixes. There was simply NO REASON NOT to back it at that money- one start, one win in a 1:57 MR - and also no reason that Mr Hippie was a foregone conclusion at 2's. Two races later they quinella'd. Tennyson Bromac paying 5's and Ohanzee paying $2.40 a place. Both qualified in 2.01 mile rate. Maybe there were some big bets but we certainly didn't hear about them. As I said, just my observation.

How do they rate the degree of lameness compared with Kiwi? Sounding more and more like a scratching to me.

Lloyd... Vega Magic was 4 wide the trip. He covered 1215-1220m therefore after completing actual 1200m his time would be approx 1.07.5...if that makes sense

    Sad state of affairs

It does not matter where they were from in this instance...what they said was out of line.... you guys seem to thrive on getting dirt on each other and spreading mostly untrue rumors about each other.. that you can not deny...I have to moderate it time after time..its ridiculous.

  27. Appreciate that multi tasking may be difficult for you but why do the top drivers find it easy to do????

  29. Much more meat in show 2. Enjoyed it and finished wanting more. Possibily because I agreed with all participants that breeding is the biggest gamble of all. The Southlanders are true champions with their drive to help the breeders. I also realise with supporters of the show being 3 big (90%) studs you have to "tiptoe through the tulips" somewhat . But much more my cup of cocoa .good work.

  30. Just because you and a few slow learning drivers can't understand the meaning of the number 10, doesn't make the rule "poorly thought out". In fact it lays the rule out in black and white, and makes it very simple to understand. What it also does is highlight the fact that the aforementioned drivers, and yourself of course, are exceptionally slow learners! And there's nothing surer than the days of whips are numbered. I won't put a specific number on how long before they're banned completely, as that would just add a whole new level of desperation to your attempts to cling to "the bad old days of flogging dead horses"!

Why not Gisborne? It's on the East Coast too. I have never seen a meeting cancelled there, whether it's fine or wet and they once always race in Spring - September to be correct.
