    Cape Blanco

Let's hope that Dark Princess is the one. I know of the owner and he's a very rare breed these days in that he purchased and paid for the horse by himself and is racing it by himself. It take balls I say to do that in this day and age (unless you are a millionaire) so well done to the man.

Thanks, AC. And who could forget the mighty Dyna Vikkers - one of the best greyhounds to make its own luck and not rely on others? A very worthy GOTY. Shandell was a more recent bitch to win the GOTY than Little Mother. Relying on memory gets riskier as the years advance!

Not at all. I've had my Working for Families benefit paid into my TAB account for years. Can't comment on the withdrawal process as I've never had anything left to withdraw. I've continued to contribute to racing though via my pokie losses from my other benefit income. Kids still wear shoes to school though.

  5. http://www.sandowngreyhounds.com.au/2017/07/25/sandown-set-speed-star-takeover/ seems to be an expanding concept, match racing. I can see a huge amount of money been turned over on these races and can be quiet a big afternoon. Have a few mates around, few beers, plenty of multis an quick fire racing without having to do much research. James

  6. Good to see you still following the hounds Jimmy. It would not be hard to offer extra options but the liklehood is that you would get insufficent niminations for each. Hard enough to fill the fields now with the exceptions of lower class.

    PBD when?

Now everyone seems happy with the handicapping system I want to raise the question of when should Preferential Barrier draw be in the conditions ? A range could be never, sometimes then always. We have some fast starters on relatively low ratings so our choice would be always. At present it seems to be clubs decide 1 or 2 PBDs a programme then afew "pbd if sufficient wide spread of ratings . (but not stating any amount). Maybe someone can explain when it should be in the conditions and when it should not. Some courses and distances can have major influence on race result if your horse draws well.. I think perhaps a 15 rating spread could trigger a PBD but I dont like not knowing

    A plan for the future

Given that the NZTR board is ( by their own admission ) packed with leading businessmen ( plus Victoria ), ditto the NZRB, what can we expect from them in terms of a seminal business plan for the new season ? They won't just do more of the same will they ? the "same old same old" that hasn't worked for the last twenty years, that wouldn't be their cunning plan would it ?

    A plan for the future

Midget it is difficult to be optimistic about racing when new Racing Minister David Bennett begins his tenure by appointing someone like Bill Birnie to the NZRB. Bill is just another power point presentation phoney slash whiteboard warrior totally disconnected from racing's hard working participants.

  11. Good to see some lower grade races over 520m at Manukau last Sunday, good race between Princes Alea and Gee Thunder with Gee Thunder just getting the better of Princess Alea. A lot better viewing than the 318m smash and bash at the first turn, a progressive Club would figure out how to accomodate a 400m race which would suit dogs which are not suited to the Manukau 318m races and who do not have the stamina for the 520m. Food for thought in the future of racing at Manukau Greyhounds. In thoroughbred racing they have 1000m through to 3200m, and the harness racing they go from 1600m through to 3200m, not all dogs are suited to 318m ?

    Greyhound of the year

The criteria for selecting GOTY was changed about 2009, from memory ( that is always risky) and since then only one bitch has been the winner. Little Mother deservedly won it twice but the emphasis is clearly with the males. Can anyone post what, say the the last 25 years have produced as I don't think the males would have been as dominant. If not, why do you think?

    Showcasing is a smart sire

Nasrullah has already typed a bit of what I was going to type. Showcasing has a slightly better SW/runners ratio in the southern hemisphere than Per Incanto. He is about 5% Per Incanto has about 4%. However in K2 (i use K2 as I feel this is the best place to perceive value to a stallion as middle of the road mares) Per Incanto averages about 77K selling 18 and passing 1 and Showcasing about 56K, sold 11, 5 passed. Darci Brahma averages about 53K 10 sold, 2 passed in K2 and has just over 6.6% stakes winners and 7 G1 winners in Aus and NZ . Pins is higher rate of SW in Aus and NZ of 7.4% but only averages 50K in K2. Of course these are older stallions and im not comparing stallions at a similar career stage. But even so, I think that Per Incanto signifies similar value and if you want to go to a proven stallion to breed and race or to sell to the asian market then Darci Brahma presents value. Insider, I was just curious to where you judge value and opinions are very important in this game and you obviously back showcasing in this regard. When someone uses the term "value" I assume that they would breed to the stallion at a higher value. My personal opinion is that I think that he is at the right price in the current market. Doing a good job - yes, getting some good results in the ring - yes, has potential to go higher but I feel he needs a top marquee horse to take him to that next level much like Iffraaj has taken off in the last 6 months.

  17. 2017 Select Yearling Sale by average price sold and their service fees (2016 service fees). Numbers pulled off NZB website. I have used Select I believe that Select Sale is the middle market and Premier and Festival statistics added in can distort the numbers. There was only one Showcasing in the Premier Sale in 2017 and he was withdrawn. I normally add $25,000 to the cost of the service fee to get your cost at yearling sale time. If you prepare yourself on your own land then obviously cheaper. Jakkalberry $92,500 ($6,000) Smart Missile $86,667 (AUS$22,000) Per Incanto $80,118 ($15,000) Poet's Voice $68,667 (AUS$11,000) Power $59,818 ($8,000) Darci Brahma $57,167 ($15,000) Swiss Ace $57,125 ($13,500) Showcasing $56,227 ($15,000) Iffraaj $55,192 ($15,000) Shocking $54,500 ($8,500) dock leaf, gary1, Black Kirrama and 1 other like this

Young people will go in droves when a champion is racing and is marketed. Take Winx and Black Caviar. The young ones pour thru the gates. Yesterday, Winx had a canter around in a trial. It made serious commentary on every TV Station's Sports commentary. Even Sky News featured it, including after trial interviews with Bowman and Waller. "How did she feel?". "Is she back?". "Could she have won the trial?". Etc etc. That's what brings the younger ones to the track. Now. What horse is going to do that currently in NZ? Maybe Kawi attempting to win 3 in a row in the Makfi (called something else now) at Hastings? Secondly, how will the Club and NZTR promote it? Maybe offer some incentives on course? A special cocktail called a "Kawi" at a special price to be available between the 2nd and 4th races. A voucher on entry gives you one free "Kawi"?. Spend a bit to make a bit.

Hi JL - my comment did not relate to purchase or lease costs - purely the quality/deeds of the horse. I don't give out the label champion lightly and he's not that - but he's done more than anything I've owned/bred so I guess in that regard he doesn't look too shabby to me.

  24. It is just my opinion based on his results here and overseas, how he has upgraded his mares, his age at the moment and what I believe is his future. To the best of knowledge, I believe all of his stakes winning progeny are from mares that were neither stakes winners themselves or had previously left a stakes winner! Are you suggesting that there is a horse who is better value to get you a top quality 2 year old and then go on to be a sprinter/miler? I look forward to your stats.

I never deposit via credit card with the tab because of that fee, I know it's only $2.50 but I don't see why as a customer I should pay for the right to spend money with them.

    Hong Kong Season

Do you guys actually know what you are talking or have you looked into it?? I have seen on so many occasions recently that they buy horses that are breed to stay and raced over a distance in other countries and they are running them over sprint trips . I will give you guys an example they bought a horse from France that had won both its starts at 2000m as 2yr and then raced it over 1000-1600m after that. So you guys tell me is that good training??

Couldn't agree more. There are ample opportunities for young folk to get involved in the sport , be it at club level etc. The fact is they just don't want to be involved , but they do want to whinge. Many racing clubs don't deserve the derision and criticism they get on here , as they have been kept going by a thread over the years by enthusiastic committee men and women and club stalwarts, some of the real heroes in the game, the ones that put on the show and get no thanks not even a nod but do it year after year for the benefit of the industry. Some who have inherited unfix-able messes of neglect with little or no resources to do a thing about them but are judged and critiqued against racing clubs with full time staff, the best race dates, promotions and events teams etc etc etc.

  31. Rees , congratulations on your Harness Tipping Teams idea for PJ's Spring Tipping Competition ! New Horse Racing Stalls are always good to visit . Being a member of the new Harness Magnificent (10) ten. I nominate Double R and Dogzstar1 as our two team Captains this time around. Sorry , globederby 12, champ , you need to concentrate on your tipping skills more . You have been picking plenty of second placings of late. Rees , let's hope your selections in PJ's Spring Tipping Competition are future winners and are not going slower than a nudist through a barbed wire fence . I think the PJ Thoroughbred crowd might be worried about these new Harness Magnificent (10) ten two tipping teams turning up on their Race Tracks looking to win a few match up games or two . I swear the other day at SCG Members Lounge. I heard the lucky Scone Thoroughbred Owner's Lord and Lady Jenkin's asking their endearing Vet Princess Wendy ; " Do you think our injured Filly Lady Chestnut will be able to race again ". In a normal and true salubrious veterinarian response, Princess Wendy replied " yep, of course ! And you'll probably beat her as well " . Catch you all on the Race Track for the first day of Thoroughbred Racing in PJ's Spring Tipping Competition . It's good to be back home in my own bed looking out the window at the beautiful ocean waves . It was hard to sneak a nice glass of Rohrlach Barossa Shiraz in Hospital when the Doctor's , Grand Children and Nurse's are filling their glasses first . Sir Castleton , good luck with your recovery champ . God Bless you all.

  33. Dear Captain Ziggy 09 , Steve P , Tony and Craig , Without a shadow of a doubt. It has been my pleasure to be a part of the Zig's Warriors Team in PJ's Winter World International Trans - Tasman Super Tipping Competition. I've played with some good players but this team is an exciting team and as i said , a pleasure to be a part of. My room was full of Family , Friends and Medical Staff for the last Flemington Race. We all had a good win on the actual race result. It would have been more profitable if Damien had got a run earlier on Duke of Brunswick :). PJ , you must be so proud how well your competition's are received Inter Nationally. Well done champ ! I hope you find your own Group (1) One Winning Filly / Mare soon and enjoy all the fun that goe's with that. Maria, i wish you well in the final. I know how wonderful it would be for you and your Team to be the 2017 PJ's Winter World International Trans - Tasman Super Tipping Competition Champion's. Young lady , sincere good luck with your Grand Final Game next Saturday :). I hope and trust their are no French Thorough Bred Racing Judges working on the Day at the various PJ's Tipping Competition Race Tracks :). Catch you all on a Race Track one day real soon :). Folks , God Bless you all.

    joke thread

A thoughtful Scottish husband was putting his coat and hat on to make his way down to the local pub. He turned to his wee wife before leaving and said, "Maggie - put your hat and coat on lassie." She replied, 'Awe Jock that's nice. Are you taking me to the pub with you?" “Nay," Jock replied. "I'm turning the heater off while I'm out."
