Grnz put their roadshow on with their objectives to try and change the perception of the sport to the general public (which lets face it is terrible) and to try to intice new people to get Involved in the sport. I thought It was good. obviously proof is in the pudding and we'll see how it goes. But every old school participant just winges about everything that happens and is proposed in this game. I don't envy any person that works or has worked in the admin of the greyhound industry, in fact I think they are great because in the 20 years I've been in the game, it hasn't mattered who has been in charge or what they try, the same people just moan and moan!

  2. Don't worry about the future the Coles have 5 children all coming through, all keen on the dogs. If they are learning off there father it will be a very interesting game in the years to come. There is youth coming through but they are learning. Sam lozell has started off recently and is doing very well with his small team. If you have the drive for it then just like any work place you can make it to the top. The money can't be to bad just look at the amount the top trainers on the premiership have made.

You may be right John, I am not even sure there is such a word Good on Craig for thinking positive but a new pair of black pants, a white shirt, a jacket and a lead and collar will not make much difference. I gues what he is saying is there should be more done to encourage young people into the sport and he is correct in saying the North is a good example of why. Although there are a few young trainers such as Hayley Mullane and Tacey Craik and Jarrod Udy etc, there are also a large number at the other end. I mentioned it to a fellow competitor the other week and he said it is an old man's sport!!!!. Old women do not apply. That is all very well but old trainers do not last forever. If I had a young person asking me if it was a good idea to start training I would have to be honest and say definitely not.

    Ascot-WOW !!!

The English scene is very different from ours. Firstly they don't have public trials like we do. Secondly they aren't trying to sell 80% of their two years olds in training to another market without exposing them to a race Consider this, no trials so you take your two year old to the races somewhere and you win, so off you go to Ascot. Let me tell you that three quarters of that field cannot win as they are not good enough even though they have won a race or make be two. P. S. This is not a knock on Royal Ascot, it is simply an explanation of the difference between them and our hopeless situation. Isn't Ascot fantastic?

    Johnson v Johnson

SPORT | Racing Racing: Bookies ready to throw in towel Bookies are getting set to run up the white flag in the battle of the New Zealand jockeys' premiership. And that could mean paying out punters who backed veteran rider Chris Johnson with more than a month of the season to go. Johnson was $51 to win the jockeys' premiership at the start of the season, being just 15th in the order of favouritism. But after two wins at Pukekohe yesterday continued a magic month in the mud, the TAB has suspended betting on him as he sits 10 clear of long-time premiership leader Danielle Johnson, who pegged one back in the last race yesterday. While the 53-year-old with the incredible back story has been rated the South Island's number one rider for much of the last three decades his season-opening odds were reflective of the fact he finished 18th in the premiership last season. And while he has finished as close as fourth two years ago, that was still over 50 wins behind the premiership winner. Even just three weeks ago a premiership looked unlikely as he sat five wins behind a rampant Danielle Johnson but he has since ridden like a man possessed, or perhaps more dangerously in his case, a man focused. While Chris Johnson has regularly picked up his two or more wins at South Island meetings - as he is likely to do again at Oamaru today - he is also riding at better than a win a meeting in the north since he started travelling in his bid to win the title. "His recent form has been so good we have started talking in the office about whether we surrender and pay his punters out," admits TAB bookie Stephen Hunt. "The way the market has turned around this month we now rate him somewhere between $1 and $1.01 to win the title so it looks a done deal.

    tab con ?

has anyone else noticed how the indicitave return on the tote can fluctuate wildly even after startime. nearly every race changes show the balancing between fixed odds and the tote must be the TAB laying off into their own systems. It is very disappointing to be expecting say 3.00 return when it changes during the race and 2.00 is declared. We al hear the huge bets going on fixed (which are prob more than 50% of total turnover ) which obviously. are a risk and its not laying off that is a problem but it is suspicious when changes are made after the first 800 metres run ???????????????

Just heard a small piece of Edward Rennell on the radio yesterday and it appears that harness racing are really trying to help industry participants as they are offering young new entrants money for clothing driving gear etc and also young people that want to get into training a full set of race harness and an amount of cash.A great idea and one that helps to encourage new people into their industry. Was talking to a senior trainer the other day and it appears that Harness Racing have a great consultation process with trainers etc as well. Does anyone know what is on offer for our young ones to encourage them to get involved in greyhound racing??? Especially in the Northern region cos in my opinion that area is in trouble. AC

    Brian De Lore - Article

Brian has long history in the game. Two positions that I know that he formerly had was editor of the Racetrack Magazine - Australia and General manager of Ra Ora Stud -Auckland. He was also a long time contributor to the Bloodhorse magazine - NZ. Whist he has not made his income from the NZ Racing or Breeding industry for a long time he has continued to follow it intently. Once the blood of the game is in your veins it never leaves! I would venture to say that in the past he was very highly thought of as a journalist, and with his current articles one can see why. For the record the Informant is a privately owned publication doing a great job in a very tough market. I doubt that there is any industry, harder to be profitable in, than print media. Just ask anyone!

They used to have a mentor system down south and a NZQA recognised course that many people attended with Keith Coppins many years back but nothing financial. There is not much "new blood" coming through as the trainers of the future will be children of current trainers ( happening now with your Matt) , and on that subject if matt didn't have the backing of Stu D he probably wouldn't be where he is now. Needs to be some incentives which there doesn't seem to be, even a industry funded kennels where all young trainers could get a leg up and be overseen by a senior trainer ( e.g Ray Adcock (south), Bill Hodgson(CD), Schofield(north) and say rent to buy kennels etc to give them a start. otherwise the industry will be stuffed in the next 20 years( maybe 10 even)

  27. Why do the TAB still have the NZ Jockey Premiership 2016/17 option up with other jockeys available to bet on even though they can't win now? Well I guess they can, but Danielle Johnson should be about $201 not $21. Rather than trying to con some poor unfortunate for a few dollars on this option, why don't they put up a market for who runs second?

If thats the case. Than this industry will have very little trainers in 20yrs time. The stake money simply has not kept up with the price it costs to look after a dog. Why would anyone want to train a dog when you can earn the same money without the added costs in other industries?

  30. Scratching already - disappointing that so many of the races (5 of the 10) already down to 8 or less starters. You would think that with the "guns" spelling trainers would be taking opportunity to get easier good stakes before selling/retiring their charges.

    Trump written off

Its obvious whats going on with the polls, its fake. We have been seeing this ever since Donald Trump looked like being a threat to the establishment. It is the deep state at work. The power brokers at work. Fake news will be the norm as long as Donald Trump remains in power. It is beautiful to watch the deep state, and their minions the media and left leaning snowflakes squirm. It is a new world, and the swamp is draining. And what a joke the NZ media are, completely manipulated by fake news coming out of America. Trumps Presidency will roll on for the next 7 yrs.

  32. drovers eyre- we are very lucky he came in tremendous order- us winning is no reflection on the last trainer- we have been able to place him well- he is rated in 70's but u will see his llast 2 starts as a claimer in 55's he ran 3d and snuck over to win. unfortunately he has quite a serious leg problem and have to inject frequently-there is no doubt in my mind north island lower grades are easier.his standing start manners are great so I hope he goes good- even though my 4 in the race are the worse on paper the money is good and no point sitting at home. I would rate him as a horse in the the high 50's low 60's. anyway we wont kill him and retire him when the time is right.tks for post.

  36. I don,t have too many complaints ,Re fixed odds prices...you do your own study and back what you perceive as value...too short 90% of time. However, they play around with TAB prices and should be paid as stated (at the jump)...too often reduce markedly once horse has won... it,s a lottery as to what price you,ll receive, don,t know until divs posted... Not having a barrier draw statistics tab, under the track conditions present, on the TAB website is super frustrating ! along with the track leader bias, are two of the best pointers for selecting winners. That is why I miss the Friday flash ... AN EASY FIX ...PLEASE INCLUDE ON WEBSITE FOR PUNTERS (CUSTOMERS ), TAB. Well i,m at it ...How the hell do you use the filter tab @ the bottom of each race?...I fill it out for a list of preferred runners...push enter...Whammo...nothing.

Closer to home I would also recommend Highden Park - Libby Bleakley, 89 Highden Park Road, RD 6 Palmerston North Phone 027 612 9610. Question [and I am not trying to be rude]! Is your filly well enough bred and correct enough to warrant a sales preparation? If not it will only end in tears irrespective of who prepares her. Talk to some some sales preparation people [of which there are plenty of good ones], listen to what they say and then act. Good luck with your endeavours in this current environment.

    tab con ?

In the pre-fixed odds era where eveything was done manually, certainly before anything was available online, they used to announce that the "Tote was closed" prior to race start. Races used to run predictably late, but the odds you saw on the board were almost exactly what you got. But today with everything done by computers, it's possible to process thousands of transactions in a fraction of a second. On the customer side, this allows for more last moment bets, but more significantly, on the administrative side, it allows for a lot more "balancing of the books", especially now that fixed odds is a big part of the picture. I'd imagine as part of their system the TAB are able to monitor their overall position on any event or race in real time, and have the ability to mitigate that risk by offloading to their own or outside betting pools almost instantly. And this would all happen in the final seconds of betting, hence the odds being updated a minute into the race. In the "old days" when you bet on the TAB you were just battling other punters. These days you are almost certainly also battling a lightning fast computer algorithm designed to minimise the TAB's fixed odds liabilities.

    tab con ?

This has been going on for a long time but has got worse in recent months. It is absolute murder for place punters with $1.80 dropping to $1.10 or $1.20 quite often. It appears that the tab hold back turnover to keep a favourite showing a good value price early to tempt punters into backing it at the last minute. This held back money then goes on during the race. At the same time the fixed odds value will be very low, so taking that is not worth while.

    Irish's Travels

Better you have your credit cards available when you go to Harrods Irish A lady walks into Harrods. She looks around, spots a beautiful diamond bracelet and walks over to inspect it. As she bends over to look more closely, she unexpectedly farts. Very embarrassed, she looks around nervously to see if anyone noticed her little woops and prays that a sales person was not anywhere near. As she turns around, her worst nightmare materialises in the form of a salesman standing right behind her - Good looking as well Cool as a cucumber, he displays all of the qualities one would expect of a professional in a store like Harrods. He politely greets the lady with, 'Good day, Madam. How may we help you today? Blushing and uncomfortable, but still hoping that the salesman somehow missed her little 'incident', she asks, 'what is the price of this lovely bracelet?' He answers, "Madam - if you farted just looking at it - you're going to shit yourself when I tell you the price!"
