I see the owners have turned down $3m for the horse, preferring to race him themselves. Must have been a difficult decision, but you have to admire them for making it......

$3mil seems an extraordinary amount for a gelding who has now quit the lucrative age-group options. Maybe the potential buyer, anonymously to a trusted journalist( oxymoron I know), would like to confirm the figure? There is a vast gulf between offers/requests and the actual bank deposit but great for stable hype.

Bear in mind he only cost $42,000 and he's already won over $1m so they are well ahead anyway. Setting him for the Spring Cups will give them a huge buzz so good luck to them. His younger brother Griffin looked pretty impressive too....

  9. Absolute joke, no wonder we're the laughing stock of the world. Pity we haven't got a decent journalist with some guts who'd be brave enough to look at the appointment of both Jackson and Saundry and see if best practice principles were complied with. As they say " the more things change the more they stay the same " and this us just more of the same .... presumably with the same consequences, that being a further slide toward oblivion.

  16. Certainly a tough road to hoe trying to pick a winner down there, i was always told ya never give up, and if you go down, you go down swinging, in my younger days i used to go to the races with a close relative, many a day when we left for home after a tough day he would sing, it was a beautiful day when we started away with a smile and content on our faces, but the money we spent including the rent, what a prick of a day at the races, and i can say it was sung many a time. Certainly has stuck in my head after a good old thrashing on course, so keep at it cubes the tide must turn.

  18. I had already written to John Allen on this matter. It's potentially the worst thing that could happen to racing. In 1993 we (Hogan O'Sullivan and me) gave a proper formal presentation to the NZRIB. We advocated a quick move to the internet (it wasn't mainstream at that stage) and to market and distribute a series of products that could operate away from the conventional bet types. We proposed that conventional bet types were open to cannibalisation and that the challenge was to control the data (yes...data ownership rights in 1993 which is now the Race Fields Legislation....only 24 years late). The response at that time is that they didn't believe the TAB's betting customers would embrace the internet for betting (I have that in writing). In 1998 I was made aware of exchange betting because I sat next to Bert Black at a dinner party in the UK. I eventually told Hickton and the Board about that and they said it wouldn't work (in writing once again). Now to this latest....the Block Chain betting event known as Bookie. This will singularly change the course of betting, games of chance, sports and racing. It will allow "a new Betfair" to be created but there will not be a central server where Betfair's owners can clip the ticket. There will not be a transfer of funds if someone wins or loses, it will be a transferable credit chip that can be converted to value in many forms (money, assets, warrants, futures, etc etc etc) with no currency issues. There will be no laws (no rules in respect of laying horses), no police looking at your betting activity and no bureaucrat saying you can't make that type of bet as its against the law. There will be no limits. And if anyone argues against this, then they will be misinformed in respect of block chain. So to the real swinger...like Betfair, there will initially be an issue of liquidity as vast numbers of people will be needed to make the markets liquid. This will only take 18 months. In Betfair's case it took 2 1/2 years but we are more educated now and the communications tools have improved 10 fold since the late 90's. So this will take nearly next to no time to hit the board. In respect of our betting population statistics, its not so much that 2% make 55% of the betting, its more a case of 12% make up 75% of the betting. These customers are only after one thing....value. With no middlemen there are no take outs. No take outs means no funds available to the industry. No law s means no restrictions. No take outs means cannibalisation.....not good

    Unsighted Anywhere

It appears that many on here are getting fairly long in the tooth, a bit like me. When I began betting in my teens in the 60's there were virtually no trials apart from a scurry for the new season 2 year olds so what's the problem now? We punted then as we still do, some trials winners are pumped up with the express purpose of selling and those who run well over 800 or 1000 metres don't neccessarily do the job on raceday anyway. I do recall Ray Verner being one of the greatest with babies and getting first-up winners. Later on Brian Smith was fairly adept at this too. Just make your choice and follow your instincts.

  31. This just keeps getting more and more ridiculous. The Victorian prize money increases are funded by a 9% increase in betting turnover there. I'd suggest much of that is due to the minimum bet rules they introduced around a year ago. I'd also suggest a large factor in the continuing turnover decrease here (despite what the NZRB say) is the direct and indirect impacts of the TAB banning or unreasonably restricting some punters....

    Trump written off

not sure what the Pyramid building your referring to, but the essence of my previous comments regarding the book of Genesis referred to the Pharoah of Egypt who had a dream which disturbed him, and Joseph's interpretation of the Pharoah's Dream dream interpretation being 7 years of prosperity, followed up with 7 years of famine or shortage the likelihood of Trump running for a second term amounts to a 7year term.. theoretically 8 years if you include the year where he takes time out to do a second campaign Make America Great again is 7 years of Trumps time bringing forth prosperity for Ameica, whats interesting is Trumps advisor.. none other than Jared Kushner Husband of Ivanka Trump, this is the Jewish Connection(Joseph). coincidence?? The 7 years of famine or shortage imho, will play out cumulatively in Surrounding nations, and as a result of Natural disaster's and possibly Man-made disasters.. ie Wars, health outbreaks, financial collapse of systems etc.... these probably all playing out in the latter years of Trumps presidency Triple Crown horse winner American Pharoah, might be simply a coincidence, sure!! but look into the pedigree of American Pharoah and there are Horse names which are synonymous with the time of Joseph and the Pharoah of old, the most notable being Star of Goshen http://www.pedigreequery.com/american+pharoah take this theory with a grain of salt... becos thats all it is cheeRs

Seeing it is Mother's Day: When I was young I didn't like going to weddings. My mother would tell me "You're next." However she stopped doing that after I started saying the same thing to her at funerals. When I applied to join the police they asked me "What would you do if you had to arrest your own mother?" I replied "call for backup." My mother caught me coming out of a strip club and after a bollocking she then asked "Did you see anything in there you shouldn't have?" "Certainly did," I replied, "Dad."

    Trump written off

There is not a shred of evidence of any link between the Trump team in regards to the election. This is fact. It is a story line put out by left wing extremists. Comey knew this, and should of wapt this investigation up long ago. He became politicised rather than doing his job of being a Policeman. He also failed over Clinton, and not prosecuting her when he stated there was a lot of evidence concerning her. As for Russia meddling in the US election, hell yes, of course, why not. They do this all the time, the most recent being France. America do it to, this is what the CIA do, core business. Western Governments want people elected that are sympathetic to their cause, normal behavior. So pointing the finger at Russia is hypocritical in the extreme. Donald Trump was perfectly entitled to sack Comey, as he was appointed by a President, and works at his pleasure. You cannot believe anything reported here in NZ about Donald Trump, its all fake news put out by CNN, and regurgitated by our news broadcasters.

  44. Your make a number of points Brodie. Unfortunately for you they are unsubstantiated and are only your opinion as much as you would like us to beleive "It is the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth" I think it would be boring if all clubs raced at your favourite track, Addington. What makes Canterbury racing interesting is the number of tracks that are provided for racing. Makes for varied racing patterns and many chances for upsets. You dislike Alex Park and call it boring. They race there every week with no other tracks available except Cambridge. Racing gets into a predictable pattern (which I dont mind) that you dislike. Addington would soon fall into the same if that was where the majority of harness racing was held. Drivers would fall into similar racing patterns without the thought of what to do on bigger and smaller tracks. You might like it Brodie but I think most people would be turned off Have you seen Malbrough, Nelson, Kaikoura or Mots books to say that the reality is they are not financial. I havnt seen the books but would say that they are often more financial then the 'larger' clubs. They are often run by volanteers, gain local sponsorship more readily and attract much bigger crowds. The land would be more valuable in housing etc, however this applies to ALL racing clubs and most sporting venues anywhere here in NZ and overseass. Your point is irrelevant. If everybody sold their land what would they do with the money with nowhere to race or have sports. Maybe keep one venue Addington and race there with their local money for the same trainers and owners to enjoy. Boooring! Addington is a good track, but it is not clearly the best and fairest in Australasia. Again this is your opinion. There are any number of equally as good and arguably better. To mention a few. Ashburton, Wyndham. Oamaru, Melton, Port Pirie and of course the big grass tracks scattered around the country. I dont know if you have lived in smaller communities but racing is an integral part of life there. When they have meetings in such places It is not just about the trainer gaining a living. The whole community gets behind the day with the planning involving months of volunteer participation. What that does for the areas in spirit and huge financial gain for the township cannot be measured against whether the local trainers are viable or not. Many are hobby trainers anyway with full time jobs. I think your comments regarding this point are a bit insensitive to the smaller racing areas and what they provide to the community. Addington is not the be all and end all or harness racing, unless you want South Island trotting to end up like the NI and Auckland, small fields and very few good horses racing in a similar pattern every week. Not for me!
