Everyone has an opinion on who they rate or dont rate. Constructive criticism is fine, but getting personal guys? I went through this with Thomas to, lot of good judges on here that have done bugger all in life! I do rate Steve Davis in any role he has in NZ racing!9 points -
I go to work extra early, and extra late for the 2 days of premiere selling, so I can watch the coverage on Sky, an auctioneer must be able to gain / keep people's attention, love listening to Steve Davis, and far prefer him on Trackside over any of the others, at least he can give interesting and accurate info on the breeding, and I haven't heard him prattling on about a filly as "him / he" unlike several of the others.5 points

Not vindicating it at all but a lot of trainers are reluctant to race some horses (especially inexperienced or back markers) with the rail out as far as it was at Ellerslie last night, that is one reason3 points

Pity they hadn't listened and addressed these issues for the collective good of the industry five years ago. Nothing that's happening now is new, it's been insidiously creeping up on us, and it's only going to get worse, much worse. These guys ( the Williams duo that is ) should've been taking supporting action to initiate change a long time ago. Pity the Trainers Assn hasn't mobilized these heavyweights of the industry before now, before it's too damn late. http://www.nzracing.co.nz/News/20853/Hard-times-forces-difficult-decision.aspx3 points

What madness would see the Club increase the Stake from $300k to $400k in one year, for a race like the Herbie Dyke ? Think you might be a bit out of your depth in this conversation. You are the one who insulted Chris Wood by suggesting he is biased in his comments on the two of them. Most sensible people know that he is 100% correct in his praise. The father son relationship is irrelevant and he is well entitled to be proud of Tom's achievements. He is a very nice young bloke(the couple of times I met him), a credit to his family and a very capable operator.1 point -

Could have had a better record at stud if he had gone to a well known stud and had better mares. Top bloodlines of course being by Zabeel out of Eight Carat, therefore a full brother to Octagonal, three quarter to Don Eduardo, Kaapsted etc etc. He managed to sire 10 stakes winners from just over 200 to race, a pretty good effort considering the quality of mares he served. More disappointing at stud was Don Eduardo.1 point -

Trump written off
globederby12 reacted to Ohokaman for a topic
Whatever our views are on this, it has been bloody interesting to watch. We've just been up to Auckland and Coromandel to catch up with friends and family, and the discussions have been very interesting, and with a few Americans in the mix, it got quite juicy at times, depending on your respective point of view...! They asked us, if we had to vote, what would we have done, and it got you thinking. Forgetting the Russians, religious, media bias etc, in general the view was that economic considerations held sway for most, and that depended on your own situation. Living in California or New York and doing pretty well thanks gave you a much different outlook than someone from Michigan or Wisconsin who had lost their jobs through factory closures and who struggled to pay the bills and feed the kids each week. Did America need a change ? Answer was probably yes. Many agreed with that, the inequality has always been there but grown more obvious in recent times. The apathy shown on voting day was a basic two fingered salute towards both parties and their candidates. Clinton was obviously far more qualified than Trump, but had years of Institutional "baggage", and there were many that disliked Trump, but saw her as bringing more of the same, so either voted for him, or didn't vote at all.... Heated discussion on the merits of the Electoral College - the question from a West Coaster that "every vote should count as such and why is my vote worth about a third of one from Wisconsin..?? " was an interesting one. Perhaps most surprising was the almost universal agreement that Obama, if he could have run again, would have won. Surprising, given the apparent desire for change expressed earlier, but clearly he has had an impact on many, whatever your views on how successful he has been ( no majority here..!) and no doubt voter turn out would have been much greater. Fascinating stuff....1 point -
Service fees vs Yearling Sales
Nasrullah reacted to Black Kirrama for a topic
Nasrullah your personal rating of 50 needs to be upgraded to 101. Thanks for that info. I had it in my head to do the same thing tomorrow. The Select sale is always a very very good guide, dont you think, for the Sire prospects for next season, as far as bookings go? Stud fees are everything in producing a yearling. Not just the service fees but the add ons such as discussed elsewhere in this forum for "Vet " fees farriers, Sales premiums, etc. About 5 years ago The NZ Thoroughbred Breeders Association published an approximate guide of "costs to produce a yearling" (For the life of me, I can not find it) I think ,it was a figure of $27 K. On top of the Service fee.To reach K1 or K2 etc. Can any one find that article, because I guess I've quoted it to a dozen or so people these last few weeks? "Nas the Rullah" there are some very good stats about Burgundy, too. 2016 Stud fee 5K ( even Centro stood at a higher fee 3 decades ago at CS ) Burgundy : Select Sale (7 sold Av $35k) So taking a line through the ''Service Fee" plus costs of 27 K formulae he gave a break even return. Good Luck every body, breeding from just 3798 Broodmares in 2017. Rev1 point -

How is that Davis's problem if a bloke who may not know alot about the game has a bet?? I dont know alot about the stockmarkets so i stay away from them. Don't know anything about the Pokie machines so i stay away from them. Understand throughbreds so i have a punt. Surely that isnt Steve Davis's problem if he likes something that gets beat and someone listening in a tab be it Remuera, Petone or Mangere or Eltham for that matter punts it beyond their financial means?? if thats the case then shut the whole country down because there are alot more people out there spending money on takeaways, cigarettes, alcohol, pokie machines etc etc which are beyond their means than there are people listening to steve davis's tips on trackside1 point -
Insider totally agree that Salaries of the freeloaders at the head of the NZRB should be performance based. People are voting with their feet. Crowd size at the Select Sale on Wednesday and yesterday well down on previous years. No incentive to race horses while minimum stakes are cemented at $7,000. As for the Festival Sale NZ Bloodstock should be playing the song Sunday Bloody Sunday over the intercom.1 point
-
After two days of the Select Sale it's a mess. The aggregate is down from 19.2 million to just over 14.0 million with slightly more catalogued and far less actually sold. Thats over 5 million gone from the industry just like that. It's a 27% drop in income for the participants. The fallout this time will be horrible. Last year everyone got a reprieve with the first rise in five years or thereabouts and now this.! I wish Bill English, Nathan Guy, Glenda Hughes and John Allen had been there for the last two days rather than Monday, then they might finally understand, if that is possible! I say, apply the same percentage drop to the staff of the Racing Board, both income and numbers, then our Industry might just have a chance1 point

I'm surprised by your attitude Globe. You profess to being Christian in your beliefs, yet you want to gamble on an assassination of a duly elected President in Donald Trump. Don't get me wrong, i like a gamble, but i find what you are proposing offensive, and i certainly will not take up your offer. Eventually all the disenfranchised left wing loony's will come to the realisation that Donald Trump is the elected President of the USA. He's not your President Globe, he's the American peoples President. My opinion is, and has always been, he will go on to be a great President. Whether there is a war on his watch remains to be seen, but one thing is certain, he will not roll over on foreign policy like Obama did. As for being impeached, that will not happen. This is just ravings from the loony left that cannot face the fact they lost. Imagine how bad the world would of looked if crooked Hillary and her loony backers had won. No, the world escaped a bullet there. And finally, Donald will not be assassinated, but will go on to forfull his destiny, and make America great again. And he is wasting no time in this regard. I find it is remarkable a man of 70yrs old has the energy that is, and has been displayed by Donald Trump. He completely out hustled Hillary and the Democrats in the campaign leading up to the election, and men half his age couldn't keep up. He is working so hard that after the first 3 months in office he risks having nothing to do for the following 3 and 3/4 yrs of this term. I will predict here and now, Donalds reign will be 2 terms if he wants it. I think the possibility is though, he may complete his agenda, then hand over to Mike Pence for the 2nd term. One thing is sure though, the loony left will not get a look in next time. The world will trend right. Just watch Europe.1 point

Murray Edmonds. Crucified!!!!!!!!!
globederby12 reacted to Trident for a topic
I care about horse welfare very much. If a trainer / driver is repeatedly hitting his horse with haymakers in front of a crowd in the home straight then what does he get up to with that horse away from the public eye? Having said that my biggest concern with excessive whip use is when it occurs simultaneously with betting movements in lesser races. This occurs routinely at NSW harness meetings. You see a horse we will call "Nottodaythanks" start at Bathurst. Has got form and you expect it to perform well. It opens up at $4. By the time the race starts the horse is paying $6.50. No money has arrived for the horse. At the start of the race the driver makes no attempt to obtain a prominent position despite all the winners being on pace that night. He makes no attempt to improve and allows other horses to go around him until he's in a hopeless position. He makes a perfunctory run at the 800 just to see how wide and close to the leaders he can get for a few strides and then gives the horse a couple of token slaps for appearance sake. Then same horse starts a week later at Bankstown. Poorly drawn this time. Horse opens up at $7. Race starts and horse has been the subject of substantial support. Shortly after the race starts his price drops down to $3.30. Driver looks anxious to lead from his bad draw and makes it to the front like it really mattered. Refuses to hand up. They arrive at the home straight and the driver of "Yestodaythanks" looks desperate and all out to win. He hits his horse repeatedly and quickly like his very life depending on winning. He scrapes home and celebrates like he just won the Interdominion Grand Final. That's the kind of whip action that bothers me..1 point
