    Where's Dean?

Deane trained a couple of pacers for us. The very first horse we bred looked very promising, won 3 workouts before a spell when trained by mike heenan who deane was helping out. Came back next prep and we qualified him then won a c0 trial very easily. Then a couple of weeks later jumped a length of rubber pipe caretaker had put on track but could hardly be seen. Torn tendon. Vet said finished. 5 years later deane rings up and says he would not mind trying the horse in question. We agreed to jog him up, but told deane he looked fat enough to have a foal and was 9yo, tendons still dicey. Deane set him to run fresh up west coast. Struck 3 bog tracks, closet he got was when he was going to place but jumped a puddle near finish. Deane rings up and said his poker mates at the local pub were making fun of him and horse. Says we will show them we he takes him to nelson in 3 weeks,Just needs more work. At nelson horse starts from barrier 16 ,received a good run, ricky may only pulled him out with 150m to run,won by 9 lengths, untouched. Deane did not get to see last 100m as he apparently passed out when horse was running clear. Pockets full. Horse had another half dozen starts for a win at methven on cup day as a 10yo plus a some places. Retired just after when sound as had a bit of heat in tendon. This was a truly top training performance. Only other horse he trained for us before he gave up at one point was in the money 18 times out of 22 starts. One of those horses that would run up to them, but never seemed to want to run past them. Always a great place bet. Funny thing was you could not get past him if he settled in front. Driver always thought he was best saved for one run,but one day when the regular driver opted for a $1.50 favourite deane instructed the new driver( t woodward) to stay in front at all costs. Horse led, favourite trailed .Ours was too good, amazingly paid over $20. Wish we had one like him now as would love drop back system. Deane is a real talent at training horses if he puts his mind to it. Wife just told me its too long for anyone to read, does not matter,i enjoyed writing it.

  5. Which part of it was ok ? Forcing himself on and groping a reluctant and non compliant woman ? Urinating all over himself ? Urinating on the hosts furniture ? Simulating sex with an animal ? Being blind drunk and behaving uncontrollably and in an antisocial manner ? Using threatening, abusive and vulgar sexualised language ? All of the above ? None of the above ? He'd be a good mayor of Rangiora yeah ?

  6. By the time I got home and posted that message Cubes ...well lets just say I was even less rational than normal I've decided horses winning are great fun - good for the bank balance, but may have significant health dangers for those of us with a lack of self control. That was a looong day at work today.

  7. Well that's why we love the game, differing opinions makes it more exciting. Billy was 4.50 FFP this morning, amazing value I reckon. $3 currently. He's had 15 starts from boxes 1or2 14 times in the $$. 36 times in $$ from 54 career starts. He is ultra consistent and even since reaching the top grade his form stacks up. Last start 4th was good enough. 2 starts ago runs 3rd behind Vikkers and runs past his bro Cant Catch Tim in the process! He owes me nothing this dog and at 4.50 FFP this morning I was more than willing to see if he can pay the mortgage again this week!! Good luck everyone.

  8. Spent a bit of time going over the chances in race 9 the main trot at Cambridge tonight. The hot favourite was Valmagne. I watched the betting for a while. Race starts and Sarah Lindenny was paying $9 which seemed about right in that field. She takes the lead and I immediately thought the $9 was looking good especially with the big guns so far off the lead. They go another 600 metres and she's still paying $9. Then when she looks to have the race by the scruff of the neck inside the last 800 metres the price drops to $6.60 which would have taken a decent size bet in a win pool around 14k. Horse never looked like being rolled from that point. It's uncanny how many times this happens and it's ALWAYS on the horse that wins. Not much into conspiracies but if I didn't know better I'd think "someone" put $500 on the mare's nose two minutes after the race started. I know that didn't happen but it's not a good look.

    Can you believe this.

Whips are just glorified feather dusters nowadays, and given that I'm extremely pro animal welfare that's a good thing IMO. They're probably more use in the bedroom truth be known, with the odd exception. I wonder why more trainers and jockeys don't actually ride without one on older horses, but I do of course acknowledge their role in educating youngsters or dealing with recalcitrants.

    Interesting Tote Move

Everyone thinks the TAB are pure as the driven......... But has an audit ever been done randomly on a race or an entire meeting. There would be very few organisations whose word is blindly taken as gospel. Conspiracy theory - sure - why not!

    Where's Dean?

Cantab52. Not sure where you are going with this, But I know dreane left the training of horses and started up a pet food business dealing in unwanted cattle and horses, .before training dogs. I once spoke to him about that business and it seemed he had genuine compassion for the animals he was dealing with. Like I said some jobs make things a bit blurred sometimes, Anyway I will put your comments down to being passionate about animal welfare. Nothing wrong with that, just always two sides of a story..

The president who happens to be a good bloke who just likes racing was pouring me gins. Tim Mills & Bill Cotton the treasurer had been chatting with us for a while and bought a round. Big afternoon and point being for me it was what racing was all about. Big thrill.Good people. Brilliant !!!

  18. "could gamling" Tim? With all due respect to you and your team, you are more than just a bit bias. What would you expect the Mongrel Mob to say if asked about gangs being good in society? The domestic turkey is widely regarded as the stupidest of all animals yet even they would not vote for an early Christmas. All this talk of "go read a book" instead is unhelpful. We all love harness racing and most of us are gamblers. We all have specific bet types we favour. Mine are trebles. The amateur drivers race last night was the first leg of the treble. Why should I have to give up 30% of my nights bets because of these races which I refuse to wager my hard earned on. Why? Because of exactly what Cheree Wigg did last night which even you described as "terrible". If you want me to wait till Race 4 to have my first bet then I will go do something else for a while. Only thing is, if I go do that I don't know if I will be too preoccupied elsewhere to return. 90 minutes at night is a fair bit of time. People with a vested interest in these types of "races" will always find a way to justify the crap that happens exactly like politicians will find a way to make very negative statistics sound and appear very positive. Why should I be expected to support your team? If they are not good enough to win professional races surely it's time to look at a new profession? Some of these drivers look like the before shot at Jenny Craig. They appear as the antithesis of a sportsman's appearance. Do you really want to see Gerry Brownlee take on Usain Bolt in the 100 metres? Yes the amateur races have increased considerably in recent years and some will describe that as them increasing their popularity. Others will say it's a sad reflection on harness racing when these races are considered one of the very few positive signs that harness racing is on the right path. Others will also say the main reason these races are increasing in number is due to people with a vested interest gifting these races a massive leg up while other more important needs in harness racing are completely ignored. These races are for the hobby driver. Good on them for having a go but why do we have to cop more and more of them every week? I work bloody hard for my money and if I bet I want my $$ treated with respect. If I pay to go to an NBA game that's exactly what I want to see. I don't want to see a match consisting of several overweight hobby players tripping over each other and making rank errors. If I am to be subjected to that I certainly don't want it every week and in some cases two or three times a week. I have no problem with them running ten of these races every week but make them all non tote races NOT covered on TV. I'm sure if you got rid of the TV and betting from these races many of the drivers would return to whatever it is they do away from these races. Perhaps wearing a dark coloured uniform and standing outside a Westpac Bank for eight hours each day.

  21. I wont bore you why we need tote races it has be gone over and over except to say guys like me would have none in work instead of 7 and all the other associated benefits like Cambridge having one less race on their programme last night pros getting heaps of drives on my horses etc etc. I dislike greyhound racing - I don't bet- there are a million races a week to bet on, go to any TAB and watch betting on terrible Australian gallops races with d grade riders. like a tv programme - if u don't like it - read a book. all the people who backed Elliot Daniel would have been cheering- cheree's drive was terrible she was the first to acknowledge it but there were circumstances and I had to shoulder some of the blame she gets the top and if she wins shes a hero. given its previous history hard to believe the 1 horse was going to over race like it did- as soon as it did you are caught between a rock and a hard place. - racing is not like rugby no second chances- rugby u drop the ball and then score a try its all forgotten - same cricket golf etc- hit one in the bunker and get up and down same result,- she got a very fair hearing and the penalty could have been worse- but just remember in here first drive heaps of punters were cheering her on when she got the fav home. get over it. I should point out the growth of amateur driving in the last 10 years is about the only thing in both codes that has grown. You can bleat on all you like but it aint going to change and if it does me and plenty of amateurs will get graduation licences which we would get in a heartbeat and then u will have something to blow up about - watching me draw 1 and mango and tony would have me 4 wide after a 100 metres. Its could gambling- better than betting on tennis we are all trying.

  22. Alexandra park is the th e best trotting track I have seen - track good. ,facilities none bette., barn wow and its proximity to the population is obvious- the apartment development is essential to trotting's viability. the only thing I would change is demolish the blues gym and have a world class stabling facility where say100horses could be trained-which would mean the club have ready access to a horse population, owners could easily have access to their horses etc. Go to Happy Valley in Hong Kong a more vibrant race track you will never see. Shatin where all the horses trained the same. menangle .whats the average attendance there ? All sports are TV sports these days but it doesn't mean they cant be both though we will never get back the glory days . Anybody who bags the apartment developments aint right in the head - any arguments re what block should be built first who should build etc etc I have no idea but I don't want to keep racing for peanuts and the best way trotting in the public eye is to have it right where it is .

  23. Some great picking in here. That Boston Billy tip was gold. Wish I'd seen it earlier as I missed on the place 6 from the first leg. I have noticed that if the favourites miss out in the first leg it pays well. Should take my own advice from that but really thought Kava Blu would at least place given the previous big run behind the "supa dog" (haha Wasa hadn't changed) Not denying your frustration Racing 84 as I assume you took a spread, but I thought the Cambridge place 6 paid pretty well given the divvies. I tend to look for meetings that have lots of anchors and preferably a two divvie race and go for multiple $ worth. So yesterday's was ideal with 4 anchors. Nangar Star's been flying and was the only C5 in the C4/5 race (albeit Melham was only recently downgraded). But yes hard luck if you go for a smaller percentage you really needed one or both of Mi Tensile or Cool Marlow to miss out.

  24. I seem to have read in this site somewhere maybe some time ago, where everyone worshipped Neil Brady who come hell or high water would zoom to the front as soon as he could and woe betides anyone who tried to stop him. Now really guys, the lady did very little different to Neil, did she? Her only problem is that she is an amateur driver which many of the heirarchy seem to despise. Ok guys, you got your way, she has been disqualified till the end of May. Now how can she improve her skills if she not allowed on the track under race conditions? Guarantee if a professional driver had similarly been charged, he/she would not have got so harshly treated.

  29. I wouldn't mind smoking whatever you are on Ashoka. Could you send me some up and I might get the same meaning from my comments you have. We have a state of the art track and soon we will have state of the art facilities. Why would we want to shift?? And why do you think we need to?? We will never increase on course attendance much apart from big meetings. It is more a television sport now I believe. Since I finished training I stay at home most race meetings now where I can have a drink and a bet in my own lounge and view the races much easier on tv.

    Where's Dean?

Ashoka. Yes he is. I understand he gave up training horses as it was a struggle to makes ends meet and support a family. I come across him sometimes when the local workouts are run, as he helps his father out. Cantab52,i know nothing of what you have said ,don't see him much, from my dealings with him that behaviour would be out of character and is not the man I knew.. Such behaviour is obviously totally unacceptable from anyone, and should be dealt with by authorities with no leniency. If there is any truth to the accusation I'm sure deane would be extremely disappointed in himself. I do wonder about your sport though with what happens to all the dogs that don't make it,same with a lot of horses. To me it appears a lot of trainers become de sensatised (obviously spelt wrong) to the whole process of dealing with unwanted animals. Bit like those who work in the freezing works can become. Anyway best not to pass judgment on rumour.

  34. Nslram... You appear to be implying that you can't trust your fellow Board Members with liquid assets. You are aware of what I have previously suggested...that a state-of-the-art harness track be built from scratch on land that would allow the sport and industry to proceed into the foreseeable future...but you choose to ignore this. I believe that it is already readily apparent that harness racing has no future in Auckland at its current location. You disagree. The future will decide which one of us is correct. All the best. Looking to kick off LGL III on Waitangi Day (6 February), running through to Easter handicap day at Ellerslie. Perfect timing before the onset of winter tracks. Format seems pretty good to me so not proposing any radical changes. Maybe a plate comp for those knocked out who want to soldier on.

    Triple Trio TAB

Terrible news about Dusty. I only knew him on here but in this era true friendships can develop online even if you never meet. On the caff he was an astute assessor of races, a great contributor, and a real generous provider of his thoughts. He sure knew his dogs! Just back in October Dusty messaged me and I've decided to share some of his comments. I do this out of respect for him because I think it shows his compassion and determination to continue to contribute to helping others. I hope that maybe his friends and family might get something positive out of this small snippet that he shared with me. 8 October 2015 "Going through gluten withdrawal at the moment which is kinda like a drug withdrawal-not pleasant but been through a lot so I'll be fine once my system sorts itself. I've been spending most of my time helping others in Facebook health groups while I've been struggling to help myself! Hoping to be 100% in 2-3 years from now which would be a good result after being sick off and on pretty much my whole life(am 35). When I'm well, I have options. Wanna get into the dogs more seriously because I'm going really well(putting loads of work in studying/recording bets etc as I was) and found best tracks are in the North Island-might have told you that ages ago. Best bet types have been Jackpot First 4s and Eachway. Will be nice to get to the tracks again because that's what I really like. Also like to get back into owning dogs, haven't had one for about 3 years. I am considering getting into Counselling, but obviously want to be 100% to do the training. Have always considered doing tertiary so just gotta get myself right. Have had plenty myself, I'm an empath and had fair share of tough going. The other option I'm considering is Functional Medicine/Holistic doctor as I'm pretty much doing that already with advice that I offer but don't get paid, just happy to volunteer at the moment and get a name for myself. My brother is a web designer so he could do me a website for zip." RIP Eugene/Dusty
