Just recently the Birdsville Races featured on TV , a small town of a few hundred got 6000 to their Cup day. Off-track entertainment included Boxing matches. Plenty of great one-off meetings- some 60 plus race on Melbourne Cup day alone. I've been to Colac ,Kilmore,Werribee ,Mornington among others.....paid an entry fee to them all ,so didn't see many Kiwis there !!!3 points -

who cares how much turnover they do , they are the only gambling i know of that includes turnover in their accounts as the gross figures . the others all report the net of divs. this year turnover was up more than 6% yet net turnover others report as turnover was down. It is this punters losses figure that is the only one that has relevance. I suspect that the turnover is used to justify the massive salaries and excessive staff levels. Hard to believe a National government allows this old boys club to blunder on wasting tens of millions with a monopoly in NZ1 point -

Firstly, they have to be seen to be doing stuff - whether it works or not is for them to spin another day. The jackpot panacea for industry profits is just uninformed corporate wankery. Commingling is less relevant now the TAB has matured foreign race fixed odds offering - punters have dividend stability. Again a distraction project that sounds great but will deliver bugger all. The NZRB statement of intent says they'll make $150m more turnover this year - more wankery. How will they?1 point -

COX PLATE VS MELBOURNE CUP

If I had leased out a mare and didn't stand to gain from the prizemoney - I'd rather she won the Cox Plate. Otherwise, the romance, glamour and prizemoney of the Melbourne Cup are hard to overlook.1 point -
Hi ReillyM - not sure at this stage but after NZ Cup the next big $ race isnt until Auckland Cup in March 2015 so a race like the Brisbane Cup might be an option or Paws of Thunder in Jan 2015 Think he deserves his chance in Aus as he has the box speed to give himself a chance and can run out a strong 520m1 point

No need to loose sleep Heds. We are likely to get the latest version from Paris - I am sure our suits are "onto it" - surely, of them in the throng may see advantages in such a system Silly me, sorry - forgot, you need TV to watch and enjoy and they canned that - oh well, another day maybe ............1 point

When they are getting 10 nominations for a C5 and also running a C4 over the same distance I don't see why they don't make the C4 a C4/5 race so the best dogs aren't missing a run. Quality over quantity any day and I'm positive punters want to see the best dogs possible lining up. Seems like an easy decision to me.1 point -

Very much agree. I was a tad sceptical about them taking the Sydney route but Donna got it bang on and is certainly a great ambassador for New Zealand racing.1 point -

I respect opinions and we are all entitled to them. In regards to Logan Racing, Donna and Dean Logan, Ekraar, Rising Romance here's what I KNOW. Logan Racing/ Donna and Dean Logan Honest, Professional, Expert trainers (best people in racing) Superb judgement Donna kept telling me, Rising Romance's preparation for the Caulfield Cup exactly on target and I for one NEVER doubted it. I believed 100% RR was going to win it. Donna's after-race comments were spot on, gracious and truthful. A marvellous advertisement for our industry. Their care of horses is paramount and Donna and Dean will do what is best for the horse and owners. And they sure know how to train the Ekraars! James McDonald is now not just a very good NZ jockey. He has joined the very top echelon of international riders and I dare anyone to dispute this. When Darley and Godolphin book him to ride their horses this great lad/jockey has made it to the highest level of his profession. I believe he surpasses Jimmy Cassidy and will be judged the best rider NZ has produced. His ride in the Cup was flawless. Ekraar is one of our top stallions for those who want to breed great stayers. (You are entitled to think I am biased in this view). When Peter and I took a breeding right in him we had little money to do so, but had a great belief in what has proven to be correct, It's been a great shame that the top studs and Bloodstock industry has not acknowledged it. Selling progeny has largely been a "Festival" affair. Thank God we were advised not to go down that path. Rising Romance. One of NZ's top stayers, and there'll be more to come from her. The Logan's are not going to see her broken down. Congratulations to them, Rising Romance, the owners, James McDonald. The whole New Zealand Racing Industry should be feeling enormously proud of and for them. Full stop! P.S. thank you for the quinella, trifecta and E/W bet on a wonderful Kiwi horse.1 point -
COX PLATE VS MELBOURNE CUP
Lloyd Vivian reacted to rdytdy for a topic
As far as stake money goes most owners and trainers would prefer to win the Melbourne Cup I'm sure. It's the world's richest handicap race at $6,200,000. The Cox Plate is worth is worth less than half, $3,050,000. From a breeding aspect then the wfa Cox Plate would probably take precedent.1 point -
. Auckland ratepayers protest rules about Maori cultural sites Hundreds of Auckland ratepayers have called on the council to halt a consents process they claim is unfair and undemocratic. They want a transparent evaluation of 3,600 sites of historical signifance, and local iwi Ngati Iwi agrees with them. Their frustration has been sparked by a requirement to consult with Manu Whenua when building or altering any property near so-called special sites. Across Auckland, 3,600 sites have been identified as being of cultural significance to Maori. And it's forcing applicants to consult with up to 19 different iwi based as far away as Whangarei in the north and Paeroa in the south. Many at a public meeting on the issue questioned the status given to some of the sites. "The scope of the sites of interest value is so broad and ill-defined it's obvious that they've been prepared in haste and without thorough research," said Lee short, the meeting organiser. Property developer Sir Bob Jones said: "The nonsense has to stop and we need to not pull our punches in the way we do it." Even iwi agree more research is needed. "I think there's no doubt that the sites need to be identified more precisely. It's pretty clumsily done," said Ngarimu Blair of Ngati Whatua. Mr Blair said Ngati Whatua's biggest fear is that "with this backlash" this whole process could potentially be wiped "and we're back to square one, where our sites again have little protection." But in a statement, the council says one of its key roles is to protect heritage and of 6,000 consents processed in the last six months, only 200, or 3% of them, have triggered Manu Whenua assessments. But opponents say the process is undemocratic and have urged ratepayers to make submissions to a Government hearing that's underway. http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/auckland-ratepayers-protest-rules-maori-cultural-sites-6110514 Short video here > http://tvnz.co.nz/national-news/auckland-ratepayers-protest-rules-maori-cultural-sites-6110514/video?vid=61107331 point
