Back in a couple of weeks. Has been subject to a major revamping by the sounds of it. More focus on feature meetings and less of the dribble we are used to following the first ad break. Sounds positive. Oh, Mick is back on deck too!

  2. Only an average ending to a good week. I finished off the week playing 6 races of the low grade Addington and ending up pocketing around $200. I then headed off to the TAB and realized some profits as planned. Returning home, I missed the first from Wanganui but did play most of the races between 2 & 11. Wanganui saw my account bouncing back & forth up thru race 10. In the 11th I felt good about Leadfoot Lenny and wagered the $50 I was ahead at that point on him to FF place @ $2.00. He was held 3 wide in the corner and failed to finish in the top three. After that miss I was exactly even for the meeting and called it quits for the night.

    RIP Mr Tiz...

Farewell , Brave Brave Man. It was horses like him and others of their eras that drew the racing public and general public to racecourses across NZ. Mr Tiz, Show Gate, Grey Way, Battle Eve, La Mer, Oh the list can go on and on.....but I think you all understand what I am saying. Even typing their names I can see flashes of their outstanding performances.

What was wrong with it? I just listened to it and found no problems with it. You obviously can't have heard Trevor much the last few years if you think that's as bad as some of his daily blunders! Addington deserves better!

    Trevor

Actually if he was a cricket commentator he'd make huge calls like "Taylor should be top scorer today" "Australia will knock these off in a canter" "He won't drop this" "Looking at his average, he won't score many" "He's dropped it. Well there's no certainties in cricket"

    Trevor

Trev's mistakes are largely borne out of his general approach to commentating. At the start of the race he is thinking about how he thinks it will pan out and hence his first thought is either yes, that's what I thought, or gee I didn't expect that. Rather than his mind being focused on the first dog to jump out of the boxes and then the next and so on. If he was a cricket commentator his mindset would be around his preferred team or players and you'd never get a good read of the broader picture of the game. He'd fit right in with Healey and Slater

  12. She's still a very good dog and good on Bob for keeping her to Auckland, she loves it there, Bob has done his share of travelling over the years. Keeping here to the one run a week at home is looking after her and prolonging her racing career. If everyone else would like to try and knock her off her pedestal, you will have to come to Auckland.

    $500 import fee

I guess it should be approached from the point of view "is it fair"?. I have expressed some strong opinions on this subject and believe that the charge is not only fair but logical. Steve, I guess the NZ public trainer would not be paying the fee the owner would, so it would just be a small percentage increase in the whole cost to the owner. In a case like Dennis's where the dogs he purchases are for himself or at least 50% is, there is a bit more personal cost but it is obviously still good business. As for the Aussie, of course he would complain, less work for their Gap program, exit route for nonnies and squibs and a good way of turning a profit on a dog that is not going to make it in Aus. Only fair he pays and $500 is probably a bit light.

  16. 2admin2, I've been bitten and nearly kicked, I completely understand that a firm hand is needed at times, but if you're going to do it in public with TV cameras present then you deserve to be done for stupidity. As we are all very aware, there are more people out there that know nothing about racing and could care less if the whole industry folded than there are of us. Their perception is very important.

A Freakish sprinter and his win in the Galaxy was simply stunning; had to be seen to be believed. Definitely the best NZ sprinter I've seen. Glad to see he's been given the special honour of being buried at Wexford and not entirely unexpected.

    % betting tripple trio etc.

You're right it doesn't and can't compete with Lotto. It's a skill based bet cf a pure chance based one. That also means it will be won at a much greater frequency than Lotto will. I'm not convinced that % betting can affect the pool growth somehow because the win is relative. So, if a 10% ticket wins, 90% of the pool still jackpots.

    Thank God for the Aussies

Buying strategy of the Asians - let's differentiate between Singapore, Macau, Hong Kong and unfortunately, China & Mongolia (yes Mongolia was buying horses at the Inglis classic). Until this year, many Asians flocked to NZ due to the low value NZD..which makes buying sense - reasonable horses for reasonable money. Of course with the likes of Te Akau and Laurie Laxon being based in Singapore there will be a natural progression of NZ bred horses to the island city. However as the class of horse in Singapore is not of the same standard as HKG, and they won't pay as much for a horse as the HKJC or individual HKG buyers. HKG buys many horses from the UK/Ireland/France and the USA….however now the Australians have many high profile English/Irish stallions standing and the HKG buyers know these stallions, that's a contributing factor as to why they have been big time buyers. i.e. highest price yearling in the NZB select sale is going to HKG - by Dylan Thomas from a full sister to Nom de Jeu…and that's an example of unless he is a group 1 winner in HKG, that sale is not doing the mare's breeding record any good and a good potential colt with reasonable stallion residual has been lost. (Dear God, I do hope I am wrong and this lovely horse is a champion) In addition, the only Galizzz horse in the Premier sale (out of a half sister to Mastercraftsman) - this filly went to the UK …a great example of how to let a lovely potential mare go…at NZD200k what a lovely buy for a local stud master…perhaps she should have gone to Sydney Easter…. I'm still of the opinion that this is devaluing both the Aus and the NZ stud books as many of these high priced horses that go to HKG will rarely see the light of day. many never start, let alone reach their full potential….and that's the long term problem for the breeders and their mares. It will happen in Aust to a degree but as the local industry is relatively strong (there are sufficient big money owners/syndicates), it will take much longer for these issues to surface. However as a breeder, yes the money in the short term is great, but long term it is damaging my mares breeding record. That is where the problem is…Asian racing success is not enhancing either country's stud book, just breeders pockets in the short term! Don't come up as a small country with a chip on the shoulder mentality - it doesn't wash. If you read my posts in context, I'm saying you have had absolutely beautiful bloodstock and the best country in the world to breed and grow them out. However the quality of the stud book is going down the drain and you are now paying for that. The Premier sales analysis testifies this. I revisit my opening post "Thank God for the Aussies" - where by 33% of total revenue was generated by Australian based stallions. And it bloody well shouldn't!

  30. NZGRA needs to try and get these sprinters racing against each other more. It's a crying shame we have 2 gun sprinters in Bright Star and Dixie Lee ( who I hope pulls up alright after last night ) who have won 45+ races each on their respective tracks and never travelled. I don't blame connections but IMO Bright Star could never be regarded as a champion if you never leave / win outside your home track. I think Sozin's Comet, Wild Punting, Need To Chill etc would give her a run for her money.

  31. Hi Dusty, No, I don't at all consider myself a professional. I do not depend on winning to make ends meet. I wager only what I can easily afford to lose. Since spring I have been on fire with the greyhounds. This has been by far the best year for returns from greyhound punting in the 5 or so years since I began playing them in NZ. Yes, I've had my share of down days where I've halved my starting balance, but the up days have far out-weighed the downs. This week alone, which for example I'll rule out last Monday which I gambled on track at Manakau, Tuesday morning I had only $100 in my TAB account. I didn't play Ascot at all on Tues, I played 7 races (as I recall) at Palmy on Wed, I played 3 races at Cambridge yesterday avro (1 win & 2 losses and did lose a bit for the meeting), and what I've posted fo Chch last night. What was $100 Tuesday morning is now $954. It's not earth moving stuff but I've never lost $850 in three days! Off to work this morning (I only work 20 hrs/week & giving my notice of leaving on Monday) and probably have a bit of a play on the low grade Chch meeting. Between Chch & Wanganui meetings, I'll be off to the TAB and reduce my account balance to between $200 & $300, with the rest off to the bank. I'm expecting this run to go on for another month or two until the autumn starts to take hold. As the air temp starts to drop, history says so will my returns, so I'll be keeping a very close eye on the clothing the handlers are wearing. As autumn & winter begin to set in, I'll quickly become a $2 & $5 punter.

  32. ipredict did have a play money version during the Rugby Championships: play.ipredict.co.nz. There was a cash prize for the best POT, but apparently they're legally not allowed to run their normal-style trading on sports or racing. A couple of the parties (including National and Labour, from memory) stated in their racing policy at the last election that they were opposed to betting exchanges in principle. There's no-one to lobby against these positions, unless NZRB come to their senses and realise that if they ran an exchange they could get guaranteed profits like they do with the tote (whereas with their fixed odds it's possible for the TAB to lose big) while also offering their cutomers fixed odds (which customers prefer to tote betting) and better prices than offshore bookies (goodbye leakage). It's a simple argument too, especially if you're making your case to a government which has extolled the virtues of another type of exchange (stock exchange) and shown its support for exchanges by floating state assets. All you have to do is tell them it's the exact same thing, and when they make the silly argument "Doesn't being able to bet on a horse/team to lose mean rampant corruption will follow?", explain that betting on the All Blacks to beat the Wallabies (perfectly legal right now) is the same as betting on the Wallabies to lose to the All Blacks. ------------ Back to the Triple Trio, if they wanted to capture the imagination (and money) of the general public they needed: a.) a product which would jackpot to Lotto levels (eg Triple Trio with no percentage betting); b.) easier availability of tickets (eg a self-service terminal in every supermarket); c.) stronger promotion (there was six weeks between the time the first Lotto tickets went on sale and the first draw, and Lotto ads are much better than the Triple Trio ones); d.) to explain that racing isn't all about rich people (sheikhs, the Queen, studmasters) and drug cheats, which is the current impression of the sport, and that therefore the public's losses go to a decent cause. Supporting a billion-dollar industry which is responsible for tens of thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in export earnings isn't quite as warm and fuzzy as supporting the community causes that Lotto profits go towards, but it's way more attractive than supporting an industry where dodgy characters pump poor horsies full of steroids and then midgets sit on the horsies and hit them with sticks.
