Herald calls for ban on whips

Richard Boock in a full page article in the NZ Herald is calling for a complete ban on whipping racehorses. Calling it cruelty Boock is savage with his criticism.

You've got to be joking! Try telling him to watch overseas footage - Hong Kong, England etc to see how they use their whips! If they banned whips, there would be no racing industry and Jason Jago would be out of a job! :p

hmmm

there is always going to be someone complaining about using whips on horses, there's been whingeing about it for years. I think the correct procedures are in place for NZ as to using a whip - they were put there to stop cruelty. At the end of the day if a horse doesn't want to run it won't, regardless of a stick, and they wouldn't be out there on the track. I do wonder though, do you think it would improve the standard of riding if they were unable to rely on whips? Just a thought...

Banned

boocks your typical lazy journalist who has to fill his column inches every week...interviews his typewriter....he couldnt even bother ringing nztr up or he wouldve mentioned that padded whips are coming in soon....he wont write about marlin being tortured for an hour then released only to die an agonising death with a hook in its gullet, or the continued abugrave auckland zoo imprisoning animals for their entire lives, or the museling of sheep where entire strips of wool bearing skin are sliced off.....perhaps sheep have no pain and as its not a sport hes not worried.

whips will be banned in the end though....if you want to attract more young people the pc league will win out...it really isnt a good look no matter how soft a whip is...especially when hoops like reece jones or trudes are out there...anyone see krug getting the hiding of all hidings on wednesday when well beaten...

Rubbish

New Zealand has an atrocious stance on whip use. How many times have I seen a horse thrashed within an inch of its life, as the jockey has been attempting to cut a phantom chaff stack. A dedicated change in respect of having the right to bash a horse needs to be reviewed and upheld with determination. Only then will jockeys understand what it takes to balance a horse in order to get them going forward.

I'm not saying ban the whip...I'm saying at the moment New Zealand jockeys are joked about internationally with respect to their riding ability and the majority of that critism relates to excessive whip use.

I cannot let your comment pass without correction re the uk whip scene. You have spoken rubbish and it is not acceptable. In the uk the whip regulations are rigidly enforced in conjunction with the rspca, the whips are padded and a new air filled whip, about the same as using a cushion,is being used.Jocks are not allowed to use the whip above shoulder height and are not allowed to strike a horse anywhere apart from on the backside. They are also restricted, rightly,to not hitting a horse outside the stride pattern and are further restricted in the number of times they may strike inside the final furlong. In short the whip use in the uk is probibably the most regulated and kindest in the racing world.
I will leave others to comment on the use of the whip in nz,however carrying a whip is imperative for safety sake and if you do not understand that then you should be in another sport.

The more enlightened jocks, the young ones, are riding more and more hands and heels and getting the results. As for the correct proceedures,i will keep my council on the nz situation but it has a long wayto go before getting into the 22nd century.
