All too easy against a lower class of horse.

Yeah, a pretty big drop in class, but he dealt to them like it was too. Isn't stakes based conditioned racing a wonderful thing. A pity the powers that be, can't get their head around it here. He won by 3 3/4 lengths, but it could have been much more if he'd wanted to, as he switched off a 100m out and coasted to the line. It certainly make s a difference when he behaves himself prior to the start.

And the week off between races looked to have freshened him up.
Could have broken 1m.50 if pushed, I feel.
The big boppers went quite a bit quicker so the track must have been in good order.

Many of the horses we bought out of New Zealand over the years were sold due to the classification system according to number of wins. Because of a certain number of wins a horse was stranded in a high level and could not win there anymore. About the only recourse was to sell to America. Our system based on the amount of money won seems to be a much better way of getting horses of equal ability in the same race. We go by amount of money won in your last five or six races. Non winners of $ 2,000, $ 4,000, $6,000, $ 10, 000, $ 15,000, $25,0000, just about any amount. Also winners of more that a certain amount, say winners over $ 25,000 in last 6 races (wo$ 25,000 L6). If you win or do well you will move up, if not you will go down in classification. I think this gives a much more current analysis of a horses racing ability. If we went on a win system Awsome Armbro would have started at the weekly open and stayed there no matter how he raced. Our claiming races also have the effect of getting equal ability horses together. I think that is best for the owner, horse, fan, and bettor.

What are the objections in New Zealand to this classification of racing ?

Weeks off are great for New Zealand horses, I think most would do better if they had a week off every month. Even three weeks out of four over ten months is way more than they race in NZ.

I couldn't agree with you more Grey and Dan. Surely a horses current ability is what matters if we want close racing, and to extend horses racing careers.

Just checked the replay of the Open race. No doubt at all that Awesome could have won that race with the right run.
